Belgian Official,
A Jew, Barred
From Iraq
Brussels (JTA) — The head
of the Belgian Parliament's
Foreign Affairs Committee
reportedly was refused a
visa to visit Iraq on a hu-
manitarian mission because
he is a member of the Jewish
community and an active
supporter of Israel.
But Jean Gol, a former
deputy prime minister and
member of the liberal Fren-
ch-speaking party, denies he
was ever a candidate for the
mission.
Nevertheless, he was
"honored to be persona non
grata for the Iraqi Em-
bassy," Mr. Gol told the Eu-
ropean Jewish Press Agen-
cy.
According to press reports,
parliamentary leaders, with
the government's approval,
decided to send a seven-man
mission to Baghdad to try to
free the 37 Belgian hostages
still detained there. Accor-
ding to well-informed
sources, Mr. Gol was picked
by his party, but the Iraqi
Embassy refused him a visa.
Mr. Gol stressed that he
would not be part of the
delegation, which includes
several members of pro-Arab
groups.
Israeli Navy
Foils Terrorist
Attack From Sea
Tel Aviv (JTA) — Five ter-
rorists apparently attemp-
ting to infiltrate Israel by
sea were killed off the
southern Lebanese coast,
when an Israeli navy patrol
boat sunk their motorized
rubber dinghy with a single
shot.
Navy sources said it was
the fourth attempt this year
to attack Israel from the sea.
According to the sources,
there have been 41 unsuc-
cessful attempts in the last
five years.
There were no Israeli
casualties in the latest
engagement, which was very
brief.
A Dabour-class gunboat on
routine patrol intercepted
the dinghy off the coast of
Tyre, a Lebanese city about
12 miles north of the Israeli
border.
The craft, heading toward
Israel, ignored orders to
halt. The Dabour opened
fire, hitting the boat with its
first shot. It sank in about 20
seconds with all on board.
The terrorists' affiliation
was not immediately estab-
lished.
