younger Jews in Detroit
reflects a national pattern,
the demographers said.
"Previous studies of the
United States Jewish
population, using many
more measures of Israel in-
volvement than were
available in the Detroit
study, document that older
Jews consistently care more
about Israel than younger
Jews," they wrote. "The
principal reason for these
differences in the differen-
tial encounter with history."
They refer to the Holo-
caust and the War of In-
dependence, which the
oldest Jewish adults still

"When I see Israel, I see my
old house in Jerusalem; I see
Jews living there now. So, it
is difficult to talk about, and
you can imagine what it was
like trying to put it together
for a stage production."
One of the Jewish writers
on the project was Harvey
Varga. As an ardent Zionist,
he said it livas sometimes
difficult to hear the other
side. But the San Francisco
resident said he believed it
was important that the Pa-
lestinian side of the writers'
table understood what Israel
means to world Jewry.
"I felt I had a somewhat
balanced viewpoint when it
