"It has a right to exist," he
said. "But I want it to
become a country of in-
dividuals and capitalism,
and then I would move back
there and start a business.
"The difference between
the generations is that I
don't have blind faith in
whatever Israel does," Mr.
Baker said. "Sometimes,
with older generations,
Israel becomes a substitute
for religion."
Although the cause of sup-
porting Israel politically and
philanthropically has long
been the centerpiece of Jew-
ish organizational life,
observers in the last few
years have come to question
whether American Jews are
becoming less enthusiastic
about support for Israel.
The study reveals that
many more older individuals
have visited Israel than
younger people, and that
younger Jews — particularly
those who have never trav-
eled to Israel — express
more feelings of distance.
Other findings from the
study, part of the population
survey conducted by a ran-
dom sampling of 1,100
Detroiters in November
1989, show:
• More than two out of five
Detroit adults have been to
Israel, a proportion slightly
above the national average,
thought to be one in three.
• One-fifth of Detroit
adults have visited Israel
twice, a sign associated with
a much deeper commitment
to Israel than the one-time
visit.
• Many more older in-
dividuals have visited Israel
than younger generations.
Of those 70 and older, 53
percent have been to Israel.
Of those 50 through 69, 55
percent have visited Israel.
Of those 35 to 49, 38 percent
have visited Israel. And of
those under 35, 32 percent
have been to Israel.
• Income is an issue.
Travel increases among
those with more money.
• Religious affiliation is a
factor. Three fourths of the
Orthodox, two thirds of Con-
servative synagogue mem-
bers and over 40 percent of
Reform or "other" temple
members have been to
Israel.
"Israel travel increases
with denominational tradi-
tionalism," Drs. Cohen and
Ukeles wrote. "Synagogue
and temple members, in part
because they are more in-
volved in Jewish life, have
been to Israel more often
than non-members."
The apparent erosion in
pro-Israel feelings among
