Ex-Federation Staffer
Inspired Leadership

NATHANIEL WARSHAY

Special to The Jewish News

A

pioneer in the growth
of Jewish communal
services in Detroit,
Esther Appelman "was an in-
spiration and a model for the
lay leadership," according to
Jewish Welfare Federation
Vice President David
Hermelin, who was involved
with the Junior Division
when Mrs. Appelman was its
secretary.
Mrs. Appelman died Nov. 17
at age 87.
Through her nearly 17
years at Federation and since
her retirement in 1972, Mrs.

Esther Appelman

Appelman worked to con-
tinue developing community
leadership and social services
delivered through Federation
agencies. She supported lay
leaders and volunteers with
the information and details
they needed to do their jobs.
"She was a very devoted
professional who brought ex-
cellent skills to Federation,"
said William Avrunin, former
executive vice president of the
Jewish Welfare Federation.
"Her insight and intelligence
were greatly appreciated by
the lay people with whom she
worked."
"She was a wonderful
teacher and wisely directed
people," said Dr. Peter Shifrin,
former chairman of the
Health and Welfare Commit-
tee, which Mrs. Appelman
staffed.
"She kept me informed and
she knew Federation, the
community and every agency
inside out," he said. In addi-
tion, "she had a lot of in-
fluence on the direction of lay
people."

Nathaniel Warshay is a staff
associate of the Jewish
Welfare Federation.

From 1954 to 1972, in addi-
tion to being Junior (Now
Young Adult) Division direc-
tor, she was on Federation's
staff as secretary of the
health and welfare, budget
and planning division and as
director of the Arts and Crafts
Division of the Allied Jewish
Campaign.
Raised in Detroit, Mrs. Ap-
pelman also worked in Jewish
communal agencies in
Chicago and St. Louis and
volunteered with the Rich-
mond, Va., Jewish
community.
She leaves her son and
daughter-in-law, Dr. Henry
and Harlene Appelman of
Ann Arbor; sister, Edith
Sauls of San Diego, Calif.;
sister-in-law, Arlene Rhodes
of Southfield; two grandsons.

The Shaare Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem
would like to express heartfelt condolences
to the family of our dear friend
PEARL NOSANCHUCK

Pearl was a founder fo the New Shaare Zedek Medical Center, the
donor of an important facility and the initiator of the Detroit
Nursing Scholarship Fund which was named in her honor "The
Pearl Nosanchuck Scholarship Fund."
We fondly remember her visits to the Hospital and to her many
friends in the School of Nursing.
Her concern and personal involvement in our institution were
an inspiration to the staff, the administration and so many generous
friends in the Detroit community.
