But a ranking police offi- cial dismisses the notion that anti-Semitic and racist parties are gaining strength in Britain. "The British National Party and the National Front are in evidence, but their numbers are pathetic," said Chief Superintendent Sally Hubbard, head of the Metropolitan Police com- munity involvement branch, which deals with racially motivated crime. She acknowledged there has been an increase in anti- Semitic incidents in Britain, but investigations by her department and the Special Branch uncovered no evidence of an organized campaign, she said. Ms. Hubbard addressed a meeting of Jewish organiza- tions convened by the Board of Deputies of British Jews, which has complained fre- quently of the government's failure to prosecute the publishers and distributors of anti-Semitic hate pro- paganda.
