pressures, both financial and
administrative, continued,
and there still was no one ar-
tistic authority.
The theater was still run by
a three member group, in
1968, when David William
became the first gentile ar-
tistic director that Habimah
had since it settled in Israel.
Mr. William, who has work-
ed in Italy, Spain, Hong Kong,
and the U.S., remembers well
his work and stay in Israel,
which lasted until 1970. He
loved working in Israel, he
says, even though it was a dif-
ficult time both for the coun-
try, and for the theater, as the
actors often had to leave their
work in order to do army
reserve duty. He was impress-
ed by the company's energy
and vitality and considered it
unfair to expect, as some par-
ties did, that priority be given
to the arts at a time when the
country was fighting for its
life.
Having worked in different
parts of the world, Mr.
William was particularly
struck by the actors in Israel.
Never, he states, had he work-
ed in a country where the con-
nection between the actor and
his, or her, people's past was
more acute. The memory of
the Holocaust cast its shadow
over all.
It was Mr. William, as ar-
tistic director at Habimah,
who was responsible for
bringing Canada's John
Hirsch to that theater. Mr.
Hirsch, a survivor of the
Holocaust, had never visited
Israel before. At Habimah,
Mr. Hirsch directed two plays,
the Seagull and Arturo Ui.
After leaving Israel, Mr.
William was also responsible
for bringing Habimah's actor,
Nachum Buchman, to Strat-
ford. Mr. Buchman played the
leading role in Othello, at the
Stratford Festival, in 1973.
He had previously played
Othello, in Hebrew, with the
Habimah theater.
As artistic director in
Canada, Mr. William has
stated that he plans to take
the Stratford Festival on in-
ternational tours in the
future. Judging from his past
contacts with Habimah, it
may not be impossible to con-
template that one day the
Fesitval, under Mr. William,
might even visit the State of
Israel.
One of Mr. William's
changes during his first year
as artistic director at Strat-
ford has been to extend the
Festival season until Nov. 11.
At the Festival Theatre
Macbeth, As You Like It and
Julius Ceasar, along with
Guys and Dolls continue into
November. 7
