Hotel Silberhorn

An Unusual Hotel
On Top Of The World

et against the back-
drop of towering moun-
tain peaks,
Grindelwald is often called
the "glacier village."
It's a village with spec-
tacular scenery. The Eiger
mountain peak enfolded in
clouds, the looming Wet-
terhorn — these are everyday
sights in this town in the
heart of the Jungfrau region
of the Swiss Alps.
This village is also a
popular tourist stop, so it's a
lively place, attracting a mix
of visitors.
Many visitors use Grindel-
wald — high as it is — as a
base for climbing even higher.
From here, it's easy to take
the train to Kleine Scheidegg
and then make the final as-
cent to the Jungfraujoch,
highest peak in Switzerland.
Others get out their walk-
ing sticks to go mountain
climbing right in the area,
and camera buffs load up on
film as soon as they see the
views.
Families with kids stop at
the colorful playground in the
center of town, where
children ride down the sliding
boards as they look up at
mountain peaks.
For Jewish travelers, the
glacier village offers still
another attraction — a kosher
hotel that's virtually on top of
the world.
Near the information
center, a signpost lists the
major hotels. And one hotel
stands out from the rest.
Next to the name
Silberhorn, Hebrew letters
spell out the word kosher. An
arrow points the way to one of
Switzerland's most unusual
hotels.
The Silberhorn at first
glance gives no indication of

the Jewish flavor within. A
Swiss flag is flying out front
— as it does at numerous
Swiss hotels — and flowers
adorn the balconies of the
modern building.
But it's soon clear that this
is more than a typical Swiss
resort. At the door, a mez-
zuzah is posted. At the desk,
Meir Wagner is wearing a
yarmulke on his head.
He leads the way to a
chapel not far from the lobby.
It's a small but fully equipped
65 seat sanctuary, complete
with bimah, ark, and Jewish
art works. Here observant

Jews can come for daily mi-
nyans and worship in a room
with a mountain view.
Also on the first floor is the
dining room where kosher
meals are served daily. Near
the dining room is a foyer
where Mr. Wagner often puts
on special exhibits of Jewish
art.
This is a hotel that's a uni-
que combination of mountain
resort and Jewish culture
center. Its modern amenities
include suites with balconies,
a sauna, jacuzzi, fitness
center with table tennis, and
large outdoor garden with
terrace.
The Silberhorn also offers
its guests what other moun-
tain resorts do not: frequent
lectures on Jewish themes,
art exhibits of work by Jewish
artists, special events like the
Hungarian food festival; plus
