Mr. Dine was pleased
overall by the outcome of
this month's elections. He
said 27 friends of Israel in
the Senate were re-elected.
Newly elected members in
New Hampshire, Colorado
and Idaho are expected to be
more supportive than their
predecessors. He also said
Arab-American groups had
targeted four pro-Israel
senators for defeat, but all
were re-elected.
Over in the House, Mr.
Dine said there was a net
gain of 19 pro-Israel mem-
bers.
Mark Talisman, director of
CJF's Washington Action
Office, agreed with Mr.
Dine. He said, however, that
views are being changed by

Political Climate
Tom Dine, executive direc-
tor of the American Israel
Public Affairs Committee
(AIPAC), told the GA he will
be actively fighting against
the administration's propos-
ed $15 billion arms package
to Saudi Arabia. Dine hoped
the Bush Administration
would not follow through on
plans to send the proposal to
the Congress next year.
"It's time to put the brakes
on the runaway arms race in
the Middle East," he said.
Of particular concern to
Dine are 24 advanced F-15
fighter planes, including the
F-15F, which has offensive
capabilities. Mr. Dine said
the U.S. government is
pushing the arms in re-
sponse to the Iraqi offensive.
However, the arms will not
be delivered for years and
will therefore be a threat to
Israel. The AIPAC leader
said Saudi Crown Prince
Abdullah, next in line to the
throne, has promised that
"Saudi arms will be turned
against Israel" in the future.
Mr. Dine backed the Bush
Administration's Middle
East mobilization, but the
administration "seems to
have lost its compass" on re-
lations with Israel. He said
that when the U.S. drifts
away from Israel, potential
for Arab hostility increases.
