I DETROIT 3 Carefree, Maintenance-Free Enthralling, Exuberant Years: $393 a Month. Israel Basketball Squad Plays For Experience RICHARD PEARL Staff Writer I sraeli basketball coach Muli Katzorin is hoping history repeats itself — and so far, he's gotten half his wish. The first part came true a little over a week ago when Katzorin's Hapoel Hagalil Elyon team got to take over, for the second consecutive year, a Yugoslavian team's exhibition schedule against some Ohio and Michigan col- leges. The Yugoslays cancelled when several of their players were called up to a national team. Katzorin said those games last year against Bowling Green, Cleveland State and Western Michigan helped Hapoel Hagalil Elyon team got to take over a Yugoslavian team's exhibition schedule against some Ohio and Michigan colleges. his team and he's hoping lightning will strike twice. "In my opinion, this is the best thing that can happen to us," the coach said about playing against American teams under American, rather than international, rule's. The more aggressive style of play in the United States didn't hurt, either, he said. "Last year, when we came here, we were slow and not doing well. But after the (exhibition) games, we were quite improved. It helped us," he said. His squad has consistently been among the top four teams in Israel's 12- team Division I. Major American and international rules differ- ences, said Katzorin, a former Maccabi Ramat Gan player, are a 30-second, rather than 45-second, shot clock; no slam-dunks; and the five-second time limit on the point guard holding the ball. In the international game, "the point guard brings the ball up and holds it or dribbles it until the rest of the team gets into position," said coach Katzorin. "But the five-second limit here says you cannot hold the ball, but must pass it off and that is not our style. So we have to set up faster than we are used to." Hapoel Hagalil Elyon lost the first game of the current trip to Bowling Green by 25 points. "For our first game, we had just completed a 36- hour trip here. We didn't have our 'legs' yet," Kat- zorin said. The Israeli squad cut the margin considerably in the next three games, losing to Cleveland State by five, to Central Michigan by three and to Ferris State by six. The team played Eastern Michigan on Tuesday night. It is scheduled to play the University of Detroit on Nov. 24 and the University of Michigan-Dearborn Nov. 26 before heading back to Israel Nov. 27. Katzorin said the team, sponsored by Epilady, paid for its own transportation to the United States. Its meals and lodging in the U.S. are covered under the terms of the Yugoslavian contract. Hagalil Elyon plays its home games in a 2,000-seat arena at Kibbutz Kfar Blum in the northern Golan. The squad has four American players — 6-foot-9 power forward Terry Martin, 6-7 small forward Desi Bormore, 6-5 guard Brad Leaf and 6-8 center Elwayne Campbell, whose younger brother Eldon is in his second year with the Los Angeles Lakers. Katzorin said his guards are quite capable of hitting three-point goals and that his team is "very physical under the basket." The four Americans and 5-11 Israeli point guard Adi Gordon are the regular starters on the 11-man squad, although Katzorin indicated he would give his less-experienced players more playing time on the U.S. tour. Asked how things were go- ing thus far, Katzorin said, "Not bad." But he readily admitted a victory in the U.S. would help.
