Amsterdam (JTA) — A
new kosher restaurant
called Hatikvah has been
caught in a tug-of-war bet-
ween two Orthodox rab-
binical leaders here.
Former Chief Rabbi Meir
Just, who is kashrut super-
visor of the Netherlands
Ashkenazi Congregation,
approved the restaurant and
personally affixed its
mezuzah on opening day.
But Rabbi Lody van de
Kamp, of the Amsterdam
Ashkenazi Congregation,
refuses to accept the restau-
rant's kashrut credentials.
Rabbi Just, however, has
pointedly taken meals there,
creating a dilemma for
observant Jews.
Amsterdam has several
kosher eateries. There is a
sandwich shop and a restau-
rant called Mensa, which is
open four days a week for
two hours a day.
Two Israelis who have liv-
ed here for several years
have just opened a kosher
tea room.

Vancouver, British

says it was duped into ren-

Walter Pitman, the direc-

canceled the contract be-
cause he decided that Irv-

Cigarettes
Up In Smoke
Tel Aviv (JTA) — Millions
of dollars worth of cigarettes
went up in smoke when a
fire of suspicious origin
swept the Dubek cigarette
factory near Lod .
Police attributed the blaze
to arson, possibly by intifada
activists.
Dubek officials assured the
smoking public there would
be no shortage of their favor-
ite brand. The shortfall from
the Lod plant would be made
up by its other factories
around the country, they
said.
