Program For Israel
Accepting Applications
Applications are now being
accepted for Project Otzma, a
volunteer service program for
young adults.
Coordinated by the Council
of Jewish Federations and ad-
ministered locally through
the Israel Program Center,
Otzma (Hebrew for strength)
offers a year of work and
study in Israel and a commit-
ment of service to the Detroit
Jewish community.
Participants, ages 18-24,
learn firsthand about Israel's
history, language, culture and
lifestyle. At the same time,
they deepen their understan-
ding through contact with
peers and "adoption" by
selected Israeli families.
Participants spend three
months on a kibbutz, dividing
their time between intensive
language study (ulpan) and
integration into all apsects of
kibbutz life.
Afterward, they spend six
weeks at a Youth Aliyah
village, where they tutor and
work with Israeli and im-
migrant teens. Participants
also spend six weeks on a new
small kibbutz or moshav in
the Arava desert.
The program concludes
with a three-month residency
working on the community
projects in Detroit's Project
Renewal community in
Yavne. Israeli educators,
politicians, scientists, authors
and artists meet with the
group.
Sponsored by the United
Jewish Appeal for Israel, Pro-
ject Otzma is under the local
auspices of the Jewish
Welfare Federation, and fund-
ed in part by United Jewish
Charities. Cosponsoring
organizations include the
United Jewish Appeal, Israel
Forum and World Zionist
Organization.
