Hiring a PR firm on • a nation-wide basis will not work. We recall the failed at- tempts in the 1970s. The PR experts at that time sug- gested the PR firm should have a role in shaping Israel's government policy while strongly advocating for a change in it. This conflict is avoided once the PR work is aimed at the local market where local angles are ad- dressed more effectively. Small is beautiful, especial- ly when the financial resources are modest. With the generous support of a handful of individuals who recognized the importance of hiring a local PR firm and were prepared to underwrite it, we were able to introduce a change in our PR battles. Instead of becoming a kib- bitzer of Israeli PR uphill bat- tles, just let's do it! But, do we have a choice? If the Arabs negotiate a set- tlement with Saddam Hus- sein, it will be a replay of Neville Chamberlain's at- tempt to pacify Hitler. It will buy time for him to complete the atomic bomb and you can bet your life that he'll be back in two to three years stronger than ever. He's studied Hitler's tactics. To ensure a long-lasting peace in the area, the military establishment and weapons of mass destruction in Iraq must be immobilized and in fact eliminated. I can't see Hussein agreeing to this. Nor do I feel that elimination or replacement of Hussein will be the answer, since there are others ready to step into his shoes of conquest. I am sorry to say that the only answer, as I see it, is the complete conquest of Iraq by military conquest without political involvement as we witnessed in Korea and Viet- nam. We must allow our military to fight a war to win. When this has been ac- complished, we must destroy weapons of mass destruction and see to the eradication of Iraq's ability to wage war. In addition, we must bring Hus- sein and his cohorts to trial for their atrocities and ar- range reparations for the rebuilding of Kuwait. Anything •less in unconscionable. I hope our citizens will think clearly and support our president as he seeks a long term peace in the Middle East and in fact in the world. Norman I. Bazell Orchard Lake Monologue Instead Of A Dialogue I would like to take this op- portunity to respond to your article of Nov. 2, "Critical Clergy." Bravo, for writing this story. As a convert to Judaism from Protestant Christianity, I feel uniquely sensitive to both sides of the issue. Thank you for bringing this growing tide of anti-Israel, and anti- Semitic sentiment to the fore. I sincerely hope that your ar- ticle awakens both the Jewish and Christian communities from their apathy towards furthering meaningful dialogue between the two faiths. In the past we have con- tented ourselves with "monologue" disguised as "dialogue." This is now, and has always been, unsatisfying and insufficient: unsatisfying because we realize how in- complete such monologues really are, and insufficient because of the new pressures coming to bear on one another. It is critical for us to engage in true dialogue, because of the explosive situa- tion that exists in the Middle East today. We have the most to gain by increasing Christianity's understanding and empathy for the Jewish position. And, we have the most to lose, should those lines of com- munication break down any further! We have seen the inroads that Evangelical Protestants have made in influencing the policies of Congress, and the government of our nation in general. This should move us to take action in our own behalf, so that more could be accomplished for the Jewish community and Israel, both locally and nationally. I am moved to action, what can I do?
