they helped the camper
throw a change of clothes in
a paper bag, and off he would
go.
But first, the BBC weighed
the boys. The club would
weigh them again when the
boys returned home. Mr.
Baroff explains, "We rated
camps on the amount of
weight they gained."
"Everybody was so
skinny," he says. "We were
always telling each other,
`Fix yourself.' That meant,
`Gain some weight.' "
The BBC numbered 66
block clubs of 30-40 boys
each, and Jack Baroff felt it
was his job to look after
every one. When any BBC
member was arrested, the
police called Jack. He came
down to the station and
promised the officer, "I'll
take responsibility for him,
and he won't come back."
Then he appealed to the
boy, saying, "I can get you
out only once before I have to
tell your parents."
"That always got them,"
he says. "Because the
greatest shame was to bring
a bad name to the family."
Respect for the family was
so great that it extended to
some of the neighborhood's
toughest residents — guys
like Benjamin "Bugsy"
Seigel and Abe "Kid Twist"
Reles, men who would later
become top gangsters in the
country.
Mr. Baroff remembers this
story about Abe Reles. The
Murder Inc. leader, "the
most feared man in the
country," was outside smok-
ing a cigarette one Saturday
afternoon. His father passed
by and slapped his son on the
face, yelling, "How dare you
do that on Shabbos!" Mr.
Reles immediately put the
cigarette out and promised,
"I won't do it again. "
"And nobody saw that as a
sign of weakness," Mr.
Baroff says. "We saw it as
respect for his father."
Many members of Murder
Inc. became close to the
BBC. They supplied a team
from their block with
baseball uniforms and ar-
ranged for BBC games
against prisoners. When the
boys played against the in-
mates, they passed along
messages from the Jewish
gangsters.
Other big — though not in-
famous — names also lent
their support to the BBC.
When the group held a
dinner to raise funds for a
club building, the enter-
tainment committee includ-
ed Danny Kaye, Jimmy
Durante, Milton Berle and
Shelley Winters.
As head of the BBC, Mr.
