Local Columnist

A

male dancer flits
across the stage with
steady smile and
gracious twirls . . . It's the
show biz equivalent of "war-
ming the audience" before the
big act . . . and has also seem-
ingly become a trademark for
fashion shows produced by
Leah Marks.
At the Tarn O'Shanter
Country Club's annual lun-
cheon and style looksee,
about 225 women put on their
own private peacock showing
while 22 models showed
fashions by Sally's Designs,
Furs By Robert, Ceci's
Designs and the Broadway.
Debbie Silber telling of
grandparents Clara and Fred
Silber taking their children
and grandchildren on a
Chanukah and New Year
cruise for the third year to
celebrate their 53rd anniver-
sary . . . They did it on num-
ber 50 and had such a great
time, have done it every year
since. . . . Ruth Oleshansky
and Marilyn Kosins seeing
the models and asking, "Did
we look as beautiful when we
ed to be an X-ray technician
at Sinai Hospital but when
mom Marge Pollak went from
Heidelberg, Germany, three
years in Michiagn, seven
years in Los Angeles, wants
to teach women here how to
live . . . "It's night and day
between the continental and
American way of living," says
Lucia . . . Willie Stone, only
male member of Fashion
Group, is back in fashion mar-
ried to Ceci Orman . . . He
was the husband of the late
Detroit News fashion writer
Tavy Stone.
Diana Craig again doing an
excellent job as a very fine
Leah Marks model . . . Much
poise and class presentation
. . . Alice Robare still waitress
at Tam . . . She's one of the
best . . . Ceil Singer, chairgal
with Debbie Silber and Helen
Kay.
Then came Glamorama
fashion extravaganza by Leah
Marks for City of Hope, Helen
Rosenberg Cancer Fighters,
at Adat Shalom Synagogue.
The same dancer . . . longer
stage for more twirls . . .
another fine show, one of
Leah's better ones as 450 at-
tendees thoroughly enjoyed
the afternoon.
Starting with Leah's
dancer, Andrew Crawford,
gliding to the tune of Frank
Sinatra singing Cole Porter's

"Night and Day" . . . follow-
ed by 25 models showing
designs from Renaissance
Couture of Ann Arbor,
Cocktails, Matthew Hoffman
Jewelry of Ann Arbor, Valen-
tina, Malter Furs, Baby &
Me, Pollak's Bridal Fashions
and Bellissima Too.
Outside the social hall,
among the bevy of
"everything" boutiques, Ray
and Virginia Sharkey's
daughter, a trained
veterinarian, showed another
side of her fine line of hand-
painted kiddie furniture .. .
She also paints wall murals
for children's rooms.
Debbie Pollak Zimberg us-
ed to be an X-ray technician
at Sinai Hospital but when
mom Marge Pollak went from
wholesale to retail about 10
years ago, Debbie entered the
family field . . . Dorothy Pitt,
Mack's bride of 39 years, look-
ing great . . . Sisters Marion
Raimi and Rose Feldstein,
retired owners of the Oak
Park 37-year landmark on
Coolidge, Detroit Laundry
Linen Supply that was.
People walked in and saw
veiled "mannequins" on
stage . . . and were shocked
when they moved . . . The
three steady-footed girls had
been brought in from Chicago
by Matthew Hoffman.
As usual, good kosher food
by Jeff Rosenberg with
parents Al and Sarah
Rosenberg . . . Jeanne
Eiselman, group parliamen-
tarian and past president of
yesteryears, helping the girls
at the lobby ticket table .. .
Mary Cohen is president to-
day of Helen Rosenberg
Cancer Fighters . . .
Galamorama chairperson was
hard-working and personable
Andi Wayburn.
Hit of the show again were
the 10 youngsters wearing
Baby & Me clothes . . . and
hamming it up but good
onstage . . . so very precious.
Leah Marks fashion show is
scheduled for Dec. 1 at
Southfield Manor on
Telegraph, tickets $40 with
dinner, 9 p.m. . . . Call Haysa
Seeman at Orosdi-Beck,
443-2325.
Second annual "Fantasia"
by American Lung Associa-
tion will promote hot
Michigan designers . . . 3 p.m.
boutiques and cocktails; 7
p.m. dinner and 8 p.m. fashion
show by Leah . . . $45 per per-
son . . . Call Chris Hayward,
559-5100.
GET WELL wishes . . . to
Stacie Shapiro.
WINNER OF the annual

drawing celebrating Apple-
gate Square's 12th anniver-
sary was Nettie Freilich .. .
with a trip to "The Big Ap-
ple" . . . Sugar Tree contest
had Barbara and Ed Cherkin-
sky winning two tickets on
American Airlines to
anywhere in the United
States.
OLYMPIC MEDALS lin-
ed the head table skirting for
decoration along with white
and green basketballs at the
sixth anunual Michigan
Jewish Sports Hall of Fame
induction dinner at Cong.
Shaarey Zedek . . . Was
another big success for this
fine group of people who
know how to give a party.
Cocktail hour, silent auc-
tion, short film clip honoring
founder Al Foon, Paul Kohn's
kosher specialties, an ex-
cellent program, and fast coat

show at Tam.

checking make it an enjoy-
able evening.
Ben Bagdade, former speed
skating champion, organizer
of speed skating events and
Olympic Games manager and
official and speed skating
Hall of Famer, was visually
moved by the honor bestowed
on him . . . As Ben said at the
mike, he has been honored
many times before but this
one by his own people meant
the most.
Carl "Cubby" (we used to
call him "Cooby") Bayer and
Henry "Honey" Berris, whom
I never heard say anything
bad about anyone, are both
gone but greatly remembered
. . . Their basketball exploits
together at Northern High
and Wayne University were
highlights of a couple of fine
student careers . . . Bo
Schembechler, former Univer-
sity of Michigan football
coach who received the Al
Foon Award, showed why he
is such a sought-after dinner
speaker.
Another hit of the evening
was Rabbi Dannel Schwartz
of Temple Shir Shalom giving
the invocation . . . Now how
can an invocation be a
hit, you ask? . . . Rabbi
Schwartz joins the growing
line of spiritual leaders
who have become straight-
faced stand-up comedians as
well . . . which is very
good . . . sort of takes away
the too-much-seriousness that
sometimes labors on bore-
dom . . . while still main-
