lucky in its employee depart-

turnover . . . Most of those
who opened the restaurant
with Miles five years ago are

Those who shook their
heads seven years ago today
are saying, "We knew Miles
could do it."

ahead, man," replied the pal.
"I want to dig this crazy

That wasn't Moe Miller's
tongue sticking out . . . just a
very bright red tie . . . He and
wife Lena look good.
Then Max emceed his own
party . . . Mary Freedland,
now in the choir at Congrega-
tion Shaarey Zedek, sang .. .
Cantor Chaim Najman of
Shaarey Zedek led singing of
"To Max, To Max LChayim"
parody written by him .. .
Bernie Hoffman presenting
Max with plaque from Jewish
War Veterans, Rabbi Morton
Yolkut speaking and making
with the jokes while paying
much deserved tribute to the
Congregation B'nai David
longtime member . . . CantOr
Hyman Adler and Max sing-
ing together again just like
the old days . . . Cantor Adler
began using a walker two
years ago, but it certainly
hasn't hampered his singing
. . . They have sung duets
together over 36 years . . . The
late Eric Rosenow's Orchestra
is still called the Continen-
tals and led by Charlie Winer,
in Florida at the time of
Max's party . . . Drummer
Sam Robbins was leader, with
Bob Finsel on trumpet and
Paul Land on piano.
Congrats, Max . . . on your
80th birthday.
SEVEN YEARS AGO, it
was a gas station on Wood-
ward in Royal Oak . . . When
Miles Mitich bought the site
for a prospective restaurant,
friends shook their heads .. .
he was doing just fine with
his donut shop . . . why take
on a headache?
But two years later, his
Chick 'n Ribs opened with
seating for 96 at booths and
tables and became a popular
place noted for its cleanliness
both in the dining areas and
kitchen . . . a very important
part of the restaurant game
ignored by too many
operators who should know
better, but don't care or are
too ignorant to give a hoot.
Two years after opening,
work began on 1-696 . . . Lun-
ches began dropping to
almost zero, with the only
thing keeping the restaurant
afloat being its carry-out
business . . . Thankfully, din-
ner remained the same .. .
Now that 1-696 is completed
lunches are almost back to
normal.
The five years have also
brought a new life to Miles
and wife Olga, hostess Friday
and Saturdays . . . She is busy
at home taking care of
Melissa, the little 6-month-
old baby they went to
