pon.sor a team or build
a playing field?
The debate on that
issue, plus a push to double
the membership, will be key
items on the agenda when
the Israel-American
Baseball (IAB) Inc. Detroit
Committee holds its fall
meeting Nov. 20 at the home
of co-chairman and founder
Dave Dombey.
In addition, Detroit Com-
mittee members will be told
that a major project close to
their hearts — the creation
of a baseball stadium at the
Wingate Institute named for
Detroit Tiger immortal
Hank Greenberg — has been
put on the back burner be-
cause money is needed
elsewhere, according to the
IAB's Israel partner, the
Israel Association of
Baseball.
"Some of the ballfields are
in bad shape — they've got
hard dirt and rocks," said
Dombey, who spent four
months this summer and fall
in Israel visiting with Israel
Association members and
touring Little League sites.
In some cases, he said, fields
need to be built from scratch
— a $5,000-10,000 project
that includes leveling,
grading and installing
backstops.
Some of the Israeli ball
fields are built on soccer
fields because no other space
is available, he added.
But the emphasis on fields
over team sponsorship is ex-
pected to be opposed by Phil
Applebaum, secretary of the
Detroit Committee.
"I'm all for establishing
playing fields," said Ap-
plebaum, "but I think the
device of sponsoring a team
in Israel is very important."
He said that using a team
name, such as Tigers, White
Sox, Twins or Reds, for ex-
ample, can link the Israeli
team with its sponsoring
city, rallying support from
both that Jewish community
and also, perhaps, from the
professional team.
"You can build a network
of support for baseball in
Israel in this manner. If it
works here in Detroit, we
can go to every city in the
country that has a major

league baseball team and a
Jewish community and can
establish the same thing.
The public relations value
for both the team and the
community can be terrific.
"Some say if you have no
fields, what do you need
team sponsors for?" asked
Applebaum. "I say, if you
get a team you can get a
field." Applebaum is a
Detroit Committee charter
member along with co-
chairman Bob Sternberg,
Beno Levi, Bill Serman and
Irwin Cohen.
However, said Dombey, "I
favor letting Israel make the
decision because they know
best what their needs are."
He said the field at Kfar
Shmaryahu, near Tel Aviv,
has a backstop but needs to
be enlarged and leveled.
(Detroit sponsored the Kfar
Shmaryahu Tigers in 1989,
but was rejected this year by
the players due to the
Detroit Tigers' poor record,
according to Bob Sternberg.)
The debate is a reflection
of changes in leadership and
direction this summer
within the Israel Associ-
ation.

dent of the Israel Associ-
ation in a reorganization
which also saw the position
of paid executive director
eliminated for economic
reasons.
The position was held by
Kahn's son, Randy, who is
teaching baseball at the
Wingate Institute and is ex-
pected to become the first
certified coach-instructor of
the sport in Israel.
