the challenger of Chaim
Weizmann and David Ben-
Gurion, in Zionist
ideological controversies,
proved to be a Prophet in
his own right. At the same
time, he enunciated the
most vital ethical and
social codes, as in this
document in which he
warned against any
thought of suicide. He
echoed the teachings of the

11th Century Spanish
Jewish moralist who
stated in Bahya, Hovot
HaLevavot: "A suicide is a
sentinel who deserted his
post." It is also the em-
phasis to a rejection of
suicide by Baruch Spinoza
who, in "Ethics," 1677,
wrote: "Suicides are weak-
minded, and are overcome
by external causes repug-
nant to their nature."

mong the very first
words of appreciation
of his re-election was
Levin's
Carl
Senator
gratitude for Michigan's con-
tinuing high regard for the
Levins in our state.
He added a commendation
for his wife's share as a
campaigner.
Remembering his family
was a very touching and most
human way of emphasizing
his own highly commendable
role as a U.S. Senator. He in-
spired our adding emphasis
on the Levin record. His un-
cle, Theod6re Levin, was a
highly regarded leader in the
American judiciary. His
brother Sander is a deeply
respected member of the U.S.
House of Representatives. His
cousin, Judge Charles Levin,
son of Judge Theodore Levin,
honors the Michigan Ju-
diciary with his scholarly
opinions.
On a very personal level I
add memories of deep respect
and admiration of Saul R.
Levin, the father of Carl and
Sander. Their father was one

Carl Levin

ti

most remarkable men
in our time. He especially
devoted himself to educating
our youth and teaching high
ethical Jewish values in his
communal devotion.
I join in gratitude for the
honors and recognition
granted the Levins by our
fellow citizens.

Israel Asks More Aid
For War Threat Costs

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israel is
seeking more U.S. aid to
help it meet the high costs of
military preparedness for
war in the Persian Gulf, ac-
cording to Defense Minister
Moshe Arens.
Addressing a luncheon
meeting of the Israel-U.S.
Chamber of Commerce here,
Mr. Arens said he had told
U.S. Defense Secretary Dick
Cheney that Israel will need
an additional $2.5 billion in
U.S. military aid.
Since the Gulf crisis began
in August, Israel has in-
curred costs of nearly $1
billion by calling up reserves
and deploying forces.
Israel is to receive $1.8
million in U.S. military aid
this fiscal year, which began

Oct. 1, and will be allowed
this year to use an addi-
tional $200 million in U.S.
economic aid for military
purposes.
Israel is also designated to
receive $700 million in ex-
cess U.S. weaponry being
"drawn down" from Western
Europe and to have its
stockpile of U.S. munitions
doubled from $100 million to
$200 million.
krens spoke as U.S.
Secrr ,ary of State James
Baker, on his current tour of
the Gulf States and Saudi
Arabia, told American
troops that the Gulf crisis
had entered a new stage in
which military action
against Iraq appeared more
likely than before.
