of theological and cultural
reasons, as well as shared
democratic values.
However, the difference
now is that "the constant
media attention" on Israel
has prompted evangelicals
to question their continued
unqualified support, he said.
"In the evangelical com-
munity," explained Mr.
O'Connell, who is based in
Washington, "a lot of past
support for Israel was,
frankly, blind support
stemming from biblical
interpretations of Israel's
role in the return of Christ
and common values, such as
a belief in democracy. But
people hadn't really stopped
to think through that sup-
port.
"Now, there is a recogni-
tion of the problems of the
Palestinians, as well as a
new awareness that a
significant number of Pales-
tinians are Christians."
The Rev. Jim Hendricks,
outreach minister at the
Reisterstown, Md., Baptist
Church, which is aligned
with the conservative
Southern Baptist Conven-
tion, the nation's largest
Protestant denomination,
agreed that conservative
Christian support for Israel
remains relatively high.
But he added that "I
suspect some of the recent
killings have affected the
thinking" of some conser-
vative Christians.
Ironically, - the developing
criticism of Israel comes at a
time when conservative
Protestant leaders and their
Jewish counterparts are
engaged in more dialogue
than ever before. So far, said
Mr. O'Connell, this issue has
not intruded upon the dia-
logue, which is focused on
such questions as Jewish
concerns over attempts to
convert Jews to Christiani-
ty.
However, at a recent
Chicago meeting on Chris-
tian-Jewish relations, Rabbi
Alexander M. Schindler,
president of the Reform
Union of American Hebrew
Congregations, warned that
this disagreement over
Israel could become "an
issue of contention so sharp"
as to threaten the broader
dialogue.
He urged Christians not to
"vent all of their moral in-
dignation against Israel at a
time when its actual and
psychological vulnerability
is at its height."
In recent weeks, liberal
Catholic, Episcopal,
Lutheran, Methodist and
Baptist groups have also
stepped up their criticism of
Israel.
