Abraham Bomba

Holocaust Center
Hosts Survivor

-

Abraham Bomba, the
barber in the documentary
"Shoah," will open the
Holocaust Memorial Center's
1990-91 speakers series 7:30
p.m. Nov. 20 at the Maple-
Drake Jewish Community
Center. Mr. Bomba, who is
one of the few survivors of the
death camps now lives in
Florida.
Mr. Bomba was in his twen-
ties when the Nazis marched
into Czenstochowa, Poland.
The owner of a barber shop
there, he was married and
had a four-week old son when
he and his wife and baby
were selected for "re-
settlement" in Treblinka. In
September of 1942, he and his
wife and infant son were put
into a dark, _smelly, airless
cattle car.
Three days later, they
stumbled out onto a railroad
siding at Treblinka and were
separated forever. His wife
and son were gassed the same
day they arrived. Mr. Bomba
was spared because one of the
guards came from the same
hometown as another
prisoner standing next to Mr.
Bomba and the guard saved
them both.
Mr. Bomba worked inches
from death's door for over four
months from September of '42
until January of 1943. He
sorted clothes and shoes, cut
hair and worked on his plan
for escape.
In January, 1943, he and
two other prisoners made
their way out of the camp by
crawling along an enormous
pit filled with dead bodies and
flanked with barbed wire. A
subsequent arrest brought
him to Haffag, a concentra-
tion camp near Poland where
he remained until the
liberation.
The community is invited to
hear Mr. Bomba at no charge.
The building is wheelchair
accessible. For information,
call HMC, 661-0840.
