died. It's far from dead. But it
is far from being fully
respected either. Just like
Southfield. Just like the
Woods.
Baseless efforts at ritual
modification or synagogue af-
filiation changes to "accom-
modate" a perceived member-
ship base are akin to our
various schools catering to
our children's desires to learn
what they want (or don't). It
is a case of not addressing the
real shortcomings, and that is
surely linked to
abandonment.
In sum, the danger is any
potential move out of
Southfield and elsewhere pro-
motes change to accom-
modate — in essence a sham
on our practices .. .
Concerned people should
not merely sit idly by and
watch. Silence accomplishes
nothing. Wanting to live in or
near these cities should in-
clude support of those
synagogues and locations and
in turn the commercial zones
would also thrive as well as
the neighborhoods and
schools. For those elsewhere
wanting a traditional shul
the freeways offer as much
easy access to Beth Achim (as
Beth Shalom) as they do the
Fox or the Palace.
Consider maintenance/re-
juvenation/neighborhood sup-
port over abandon-
ment/squandering of vital
resources, both financial and
natural.
It is incumbent on
synagogue members and citi-
zens of this community to
speak. We should re-in-
vigorate the congregations
through aggressive market-
ing. Consider a program in
which current members ac-
tively seek new families, even
if as an incentive, offering the
seeker and the new family a
one-year discount just for join-
ing and then keep them
through thoughtful, engaging
programming. Much of this
exists currently at Beth
Achim. It can and will be ef-
effectively marketed.
Moving is immensely cost-
ly on all of us and ac-
complishes no useful, endur-
ing purpose except to instill
in us and our children
shallow values, relying poten-
tially on address for recogni-
tion. Neighborhoods don't
change if there is re-
investment. Crime doesn't
spread if residents don't
engage in such endeavors.
People don't move in if people
don't move out.
Such abandonment proves
that Jews cannot live with
differences of culture and
that, friends, is what pro-
motes prejudice — in both
directions. ❑
