rom the top of the
hill, Marblehead har-
bor looks picture-
postcard perfect. Hundreds of
pleasure boats are in the
water, all pointing in the
same direction, facing the
wind.
For good reason, this small
town on the North Shore of
Boston is often known as the
yachting capital of
Massachusetts. In an area of
just four square miles, there
are five yacht clubs. And
residents say it takes an
average of eight years to get
a mooring in this most
desirable harbor.
But Marblehead isn't of in-
terest only to yacht owners.
Its attractions for tourists in-
clude a distinctive old town,
a patriotic history, spec-
tacular harbor views. For a
thoroughly Yankee town, it
also has a surprisingly strong
Jewish flavor.
But it's the town's close con-
nection to the water that has
always been at the heart of its
identity. "Marblehead was
founded over 300 years ago
when five fisherman from
England came here strictly to
fish for cod," says Judy
Eidelman, a Marblehead resi-
dent for 30 years.
After a view of the harbor,
we head for the town meeting
hall, passing streets with nar-
row alleyways where fish
were once laid out to dry; for
this unofficial yachting
capital was once a fishing
village.
By the time of the Revolu-
tion, Marbleheaders were not
only skilled fishermen but
also patriots — and still are.
Inside Abbot Hall is the
original of the painting, The
Spirit of '76, which is pro-
tected in bulletproof glass.

"People actually get married
in front of it," says Ms.
Eidelman, as we look at the
large, dramatic rendering of
three patriots, which was
bought and presented to the
town by General John
Devereux of Marblehead.
Next is Marblehead's
distinctive old town. Narrow,
hilly streets are lined with
colonial style houses. Outside
some of these houses, colonial
flags are flying. On one, a
decorative plaque reads,
"Don't give up the ship!"

Marblehead's old
town has narrow,
hilly streets lined
with colonial style
houses.

Towards the water are
massive rocky ledges jutting
out which looked like marble
to the original settlers; that's
how the town got its name.
The Dolphin Yacht Club is
"known as the Jewish yacht
club," says Rob Strasnick,
who's standing on the deck of
the shingled building with a
harbor view.
Inside the casual club room,
a plaque lists the names of
the Dolphin Commodores,
and all those names are
Jewish. Although the
membership is not limited to
Jews, almost all of the current
60 members are Jewish, says
Mr. Strasnick, a launch driver
whose father, Elliot, is a
commodore.
The club was formed when
Jews had no alternative but
to create their own yacht club.
"All the clubs were anti-
Semitic," he says. "So about
ten Jewish guys decided to
form their own club."
Today, however, the general
environment of Marblehead
