Building Bridges
Across 12 Mile Rd.
1000
THE UNBEATABLE DEALER
T
he Jewish community
along 16 Mile Road is
indeed to be commend-
ed for wanting to build
bridges with their Chaldean
neighbors (Jewish News, Oct.
26). Efforts like this should
have been initiated decades
ago.
Yet underlying this gesture
of humanitarian solidarity
may be an irrefutable reality
that there is just no place
anymore for our community
to run. Like it or not the word
is "run." In four decades of ex-
periencing "Detroit," heard so
frequently were lamentations
of "the area is played out, the
neighborhood is changing,
the schools are not as good."
If anyone had indeed follow-
ed the recent Detroit News
five-day series of land gobbl-
ing and community abandon-
ment, the reality of it is that
it concerns the Jewish com-
munity, not just others. Like
others we are also to blame.
We race to build fashionable
addresses on virgin land,
sprout commercial strips and
office emporiums, party in all
of this newness and abandon
_ it in 25 years, only to repeat
the cycle again and again.
Our synagogues, shuls,
temples either follow or lead,
depending on their persua-
.sion. When that "time-to-
move" comes yet again, what
are the reasons? Include the
nonsense of an aging building
needing too many repairs.
"Let's sell and build a new
one" just like a car. Contrast
this insanity with hundreds
of Jewish communities in
these United States that are
many, many decades older
and thrive without moving.
Too often heard from friends
in non-Jewish communities
are "the Jews of Southfield, of
West Bloomfield." We are
known for the quality of our
possessions and not the con-
tent of our character. We
know who and what we are
and stand for but rather
display a self-defeating image
to our fellow citizens.
One day school here in-
itiated some years back
another bridge building pro-
gram "to learn about other
cultures" — visit a Detroit
school. It was thought to
mean another country. It was
a good program, initiated by
good people, but rooted in
hypocrisy.
While teaching our kids to

appreciate other people we
send them a more powerful,
enduring message. When a
black or Middle East family
moves in it's time to move out.
Isn't this called equal (or less)
but separate?
The contention is that run-
ning should not be part of our
character. Bridge building
should be done on 12 Mile
Road. There should and could
be a strong, vibrant, sizeable
community (of every Jewish
persuasion) in what is a good
city — Southfield, not to men-
tion Oak Park and Hunting-
ton Woods — and not just a
sizeable community of senior
citizen housing.
The message we sent to
blacks and others is that we
are city and government
manipulators (for our perceiv-
ed length of stay) and foreign-
aid eaters instead of the
responsible and contributing
people we are and for which
we should be more outspoken-
ly known, not just at the
elected level but from every
level of citizenry and clergy.
Black/Jewish friction stems —
in part — from just such
attitudes.
A deliberate, earnest effort
at dismantling this perpetual
wandering disposition would
contribute positive images
towards a healthier Jewish/
black/other relationship and
help dispel what is indeed a
lot of myth about us. We
should be reminded right now
that friction between Jews
and gentiles in this country
translates into adverse,
negative perspectives of and
policies towards Israel as
well. It gives the Jesse
Jacksons, Pat Buchanans and
Wendell Anthonys lots of am-
munition — all Made-in-the-
USA. Made in Detroit.
This change in attitude has
to start in our established
communities, in every Jewish
home. Now. One should
marvel at Beth Shalom's out-
standing programs to bring in
people — young families —
the stuff of synagogue sur-
vival and neighborhood
enhancement. Good manage-
ment sense which is incum-
bent of committed executive
directors, ego-less officers
(and there are many), and
dynamic clergy make the
difference.
B'nai Moshe, with due
respect, suffered a slow
demise in Oak Park for lack
of doing what was ac-
complished only blocks away,
also in Oak Park — not
because the neighborhood
