Paper, Sculpture
At Center Gallery
The City of Southfield's
Cultural Arts Division will
host an exhibit of "Hand-
made Paper and Sculpture"
by Linda Hanson and Chris
Coats through Nov. 9 at the
Civic Center Gallery.
Linda Hanson and
Christine Coats have been in-
volved with handmade paper
sculpture since 1984. They
began experimenting, resear-
ching, and now share a studio
in Keego Harbor besides
creating artwork for galleries
and shows.
Ms. Coats describes her
work as a reflection of herself,
controlled, neat, peaceful,
soft, graphic, inspirational,
airy, light and occasionally
dramatic.
Ms. Hanson has been in-
volved in the exploration of
art and its technique for fif-
teen years. She has now
begun to work with paper in
a three dimensional environ-
ment to complement her
work.
For information on the ex-
hibit, call Marlowe Belanger,

`Underground' Art
On Display
The Center for Creative
Studies — College of Art and
Design will host a slide lec-
ture and open discussion with
Christoph Tannert, curator
of the "Schrittwechsel" 1-4
p.m. Nov. 8. The event is in
the Auditorium of the In-
stitute of Music and Dance,
200 East Kirby, Detroit.
The slide lecture and
discussion, free and open to
the public, will place this
traveling show into its
historical setting. The show
was conceived in July 1989,
before the Wall opened. At
that time none of this work
had been shown in the West.
With the opening of the Wall
on Nov. 9, 1989, the work
began to arrive in Western
Europe. The joint opening of
the show in the Windsor/
Detroit area on Nov. 9 will
coincide with the first year
anniversary of the opening of
the Wall.
The lecture and discussion
will educate the audience on
aspects of young East Ger-
man art. Although the art-
work does not make overt
political statements, the ar-
tists made their opposition
known by refusing to join the
official artists' unions or by
leaving these organizations
when their work met with
deliberate boycott. This posi-
tion was remedied by col-
laborative work, help from
private galleries (living-
rooms and church halls) and
odd jobs. The situation pro-
duced a tightly-knit sub-
culture that developed in-
creasingly experimental and
provocative work.
The purposes of the show
and discussion is to present as
varied a picture as possible of
the many sub-cultures in
East Germany and the forms
of expression they found
despite state repression and
censorship. A second purpose,
now that the Wall has collaps-
ed, is to present this work as
a retrospective of the years
before the "revolution."
The project is supported by
the German Consulates in
Detroit and Toronto, the
Michigan Gallery in Detroit,
by Artcite in Windsor, by
several University of
Michigan sources and by
private donations.
For information, call Janice
Bergstrom, 872-3118.
