Other Laker Jewish starters included junior wide receiver Adam Ellis and senior co-captain Steve Cook, a 4.0 student who played guard. West Bloomfield's backup players included junior tight end Jeff Wein- stein, junior linebacker Adam Hochman, junior two-way tackle Oleg Ravitsky and senior two-way tackle Derek Malerman. Southfield-Lathrup, 2-7 for the season, included the big- gest of the local Jewish players, 6-foot-2, 310- (yes, 310) pound offensive tackle Andy Grossman. Chargers coach Darrell Harper called Grossman a "good pass blocker, good offensive tackle. He's improved greatly over the last two years. He's one of our better lineman." Grossman is a two-year starter. Junior guard/defensive tackle Jeff Wasser, 5-10, 170, is considerably smaller than Grossman, but he started most of his second varsity season before being injured. "Jeff should be a good player next year," said Harper. Darren Avig, a 5-7, 175-pound senior guard, was a backup in his first varsity season. Bloomfield Hills Andover had a large contingent of Jewish players on its 1-8 team. Senior halfback Brian Beck was a co-captain in his second varsity year. Beck was "pro- bably the best blocking back that we've ever had at An- dover,"said coach John Brooks. Nevertheless, Beck gained 118 yards on just eight carries in Andover's home- coming victory over Berkley. Inside linebacker Dan Ron- tal, a senior two-year starter, made 12 tackles in the Barons' lone victory. "He's usually at or near the top of our tackle sheet every week," said Brooks. Both Rontal and Back sport grade-point averages above 3.5. Junior Dan Hamburger started at free safety in his first varsity campaign. He is also the second-string quarterback. "He shows a lot of determination and great work habits," said Andover's coach. "We expect a lot out of him going into his senior year." Other Jewish Barons players included junior two- way starting tackle Brad Schneider and senior Gil Golan, a starting guard. Berkley's contingent in- cluded senior running back/defensive lineman Ryan Cascade. A two-year letter- man, Cascade was a blocking back who did not carry the ball very often. Still, he ran for three touchdowns this season. "He's been a real good player for us," said coach Pat Fox, whose Bears were 2-7. Ethan Goldsmith was a starting two-way lineman for Berkley, although the senior missed four games with a knee injury. Eric Weiss, a senior, was a starting wide receiver who played mostly a blocking role and saw action at defensive back. Junior run- ning back Seth Berg played on special teams in his first varsity season. A pair of junior wide receivers, Jordan Kramer — injured for much of the year — and Jamie Wittenberg, have seen little action, but should play more next year for Berkley. Farmington Harrison, another playoff team, recruited a varsity soccer player, Mark Lebovitz, to do double-duty this fall season. Coach John Herrington ex- plained, "We were caught without a kicker and we asked him to come out and kick for us. And he's done a good, steady job." Lebovitz, a senior, still plays for both the soccer and foot- ball teams. He handles the kickoffs and does the placekicking for the 8-1 Hawks. ❑ B'nai B'rith Men's Bowling Results November 5, 1990 ZEIGER-GROSS High Games 225 Alan Salomon 214 Keith Kingston 210 Iry Simons 209 Bob Pliskow 209 Milt Burg 208 Benny Grossinger BROTHERHOOD- EDDIE JACOBSON High Gaines 257-248 Dennis Eder 256 Mark Klinger 236 Steve Anstandig 236 Mike Fabian 231 Alan Trotsky 225 Mark Klein High Series 667 Dennis Eder 631 Mark Klinger 611 Alan Trotsky 607 Mike Fabian 606 Steve Anstandig DOWNTOWN FOX High Games 230 Gary Berman 224 Jeff Janower 224 Steve Kay 210 Barry Leshman 200 Ron Smith High Series 618 Gary Berman RENAISSANCE High Games 246-222-221 Shel Rakotz 225 Cullen Lieberman 212 Dan Niss 206 Jerry Order 204 Dave Koloff -
