after the Yellowjackets' start-
ing snapper was injured. That
meant he must make a
strong, accurate, 15-yard snap
and then, a split-second later,
block a lineman who may
outweigh him by 50 to 100
pounds.
"That's really a tough posi-
tion to put such a little guy
in," commented D'Angelo.
Country Day's third Jewish
player is senior Brian Weiner,
a backup at split-end and free
safety, who made the varsity
last year in his first season of
football.

sport which combines
elements of football and
soccer.
D'Angelo called Weiner a
good contributor to the team
who works hard in practice
and "does a nice job" as a
starter on the kickoff team.
North Farmington's David
Rankin set school records this
season for pass receptions (44)
and touchdown receptions (6).
Rankin, a 5-10, 185-pound
senior, gained 658 yards
receiving for a run-oriented
offense.
"He was our main receiver
and he was our big-play
receiver," said Raiders coach
Jim O'Leary. "He catches
everything that you throw to
him and he did a great job."
Rankin, a two-year starter,
also played defensive back,
leading the team with four in-
terceptions. He also stars in
the classroom, with a 3.85
grade-point average.
"He excels at everything he
does," O'Leary said. "He's a
great kid to work with."

North Farmington had one
other Jewish starter on its 5-4
team, junior defensive back
Jason Horowitz. Among the
Raiders' reserves was senior
guard Jason Meklir.
West Bloomfield did not
have Country Day's or North
Farmington's success — the
Lakers went 3-6 this season —
but the team received strong
contributions from several
Jewish players.
Senior Noah Bremen, a
wide-receiver last year, mov-
ed to quarterback this season
and posted impressive
numbers. For the season,
Bremen completed 61 of 132
passes (46.2 percent) for 835
yards and seven touchdowns.
"Noah will leave the school as
one of the top quarterbacks in
the school's history as far as
total passing yards gained,"
said Laker coach Joe
Brandell. "Real good kid.
Real strong arm and real
competitive."
Bremen's favorite target
was senior two-year starter
Randy Wertheimer. Wer-
theimer grabbed 40 passes for
578 yards — an impressive
14.4 yards per catch — the
three TD's through eight
games.
"He's one of the top two or
three receivers, yardage-wise,
in the whole country," said
the coach, adding that Wer-
theimer had a "real knack for
making the big play. Led the
team in touchdown recep-
tions. He is a truly outstan-
ding candidate for post-season
honors." Wertheimer also
started two years at defensive
back.
The two had a great rapport
on the field although, said
Brandell, they are very dif-
ferent individuals. "Noah's a
captain. He's very unassum-
ing, more of a student of the
game, where Randy is more
outgoing, real vivacious."
