had already gathered outside
the Jerusalem yeshiva, a
three-floor building with
green shutters, from which
rabbis broadcast the
memorial service.
The crowd included
thousands of yeshiva
students, numerous tourists
and Rabbi Kahane's followers,
who carried yellow flags
marked with the logo of the
Kach Party showing a clench-
ed fist against a black Star of
David. They also wore the
logo on their shirts and on
stickers attached to their
kipot.
At 3:15 p.m. the Kahane
family arrived, followed by a
car carrying the body of the
rabbi. As the vehicles pushed
their way through massive
crowds, Kach members began
jumping on the cars and rais-
ing their fists in the air. They
davened from small prayer
books.
Just before the car carrying
the casket passed through the
gates of the yeshiva, students
began chanting and stamping
their feet. The area soon
became covered with a dense
cloud of dust.
The speakers, which includ-
ed rabbis and students from
the yeshivah, called Rabbi
Kahane a tzaddik (righteous
man).
"Who began talking about
the Jews of Russia?' one ask-
ed, adding that Rabbi Kahane
gave hundreds of thousands of
dollars to charity.
"Where will we be tomor-
row, Rabbi Kahane, without
you," another cried, while a
third said, "He never killed
an Arab; now an Arab has
killed him. Why? Because of
his love of Israel."
All the speakers urged the
audience to follow the rabbi's
"holy ways!" They stressed his
commitment to Torah- and
love of Israel.
Often, the speakers were
forced to pause as they began
sobbing.
"Rav Kahane, you haven't
really died," a yeshiva stu-
dent said as the service con-
cluded. "You still live. We will
make you live! Don't worry.
You can depend on us. You
live and you will live forever."
After the group said Kad-
dish, the crowd began moving
toward Shmuel Hanavi
Street, where the procession
to the cemetery began.
Thousands of viewers wat-
ched from rooftops, their
balconies and yeshivot as the
procession moved down the
street. They often stopped to
repeat the mourner's prayer.
Shifra Hoffman, founder of
Victims of Arab Terror, car-
ried a blue frame holding a
photo of Rabbi Kahane. She
yelled at reporters, "Now you
