ubital, jointly owned
by two German and
two Israeli com-
panies, will open offices in
Warren next week to launch
its first commercial product.
The companies — Ger-
many's Schneider Optik and
Maho AG and Israel's Clal
Electronics and Scitex Corp.
Ltd. — founded Cubital in
1987. Their device, the
Solider 5600, enables
manufacturers and
designers to create precise
and functional physical
models directly from com-
puter aided design files.
It is not known whether
this is the first German-
Israeli joint venture, but
Haim Levi, Cubital's Mich-
igan director, said the ven-
ture is "strictly business."
"The Jewish point was not
a major factor. Business
was," Mr. Levi said.
"The merger was based on
Clal and Schneider previous-
ly working together in
1985," Mr. Levi said.
"Schneider sold a product in
Israel, which led to deeper
interests.
"It works for us," Mr. Levi
said. "And it can work for
other companies. A German
company can push Israeli
industry."

Mr. Levi said the German
and Israeli companies have
not had any problems work-
ing together.
Cubital has contracted
with a local company,
Stature Machining
Technology, which sells ser-
vices to the automobile in-
dustry. Officials hope to sell
the Solider 5600 to the Big
Three automobile companies
and suppliers, the aerospace
industry and the castings
industry.
Engineers have been de-
veloping the Solider 5600 for
three years. It will be
unveiled during Detroit's
Autofact conference, which
begins next week.
The system integrates a
revolutionary concept of
rapid prototyping that corn-
pany officials hope will alter
today's mechanical design
practices. A user of the
Solider 5600 can feed into it
a design, from which a model
is created.
"Designers are expecting
their rapid prototyping
system to process any ge-
ometry with predictable ac-
curacy and to perform a good
job on the first trial," Mr.
Levi said.
Cubital America will
handle all marketing, sales
and technical support in the
United States. It is a wholly-
owned subsidiary of Cubital,
Ltd. of Herzlia, Israel.
