As Chairmen of the 1 ,,4pI Holocaust Memorial Center's Sixth Anniversary Dinner Remember Hall Of Fame Announces Hank Greenberg Tourney RICHARD PEARL Zachor T David E. Engelbert Dinner Chairman Mr. Brode said Stephen Greenberg, deputy commis- sioner of major league baseball and son of the late Tiger first baseman, will be on hand for the tournament honoring his father. "The family is delighted that we're having the tourney in Hank's honor and that proceeds will go to help cancer research and treat- ment here in Detroit," said Mr. Brode. The Tiger all- star, a 1956 Baseball Hall of Famer and a 1985 inductee of the Michigan Jewish Sports Hall, died of cancer in 1986. The tourney will offer par- ticipants the chance to play along with professionals and celebrities, said Mr. Brode. "It's going to be a major event in every way." He said television per- sonality Monte Hall, a close friend of the late baseball great, has volunteered to help with the tourney. The event will include both golf and tennis because Greenberg played both. "In fact, in his later years, he was quite a good tennis player who played corn- *Mr. & Mrs. Henry Dorfman *Mr. & Mrs. Joel Dorfman * Benard L. Maas Foundation Mr. Hiram A. Mr. Schembechler ac- cepted the Foon Award from Mr. Davidson and then told the big crowd tales of two of his Jewish football players and Yom Kippur. "You all have this major holiday called Yom Kippur, which comes early in the fall every year," said Mr. Schembechler, the son of a German Catholic father and Episcopalian mother. "I'd like to propose a change in the date, but if it's already set, then we'll go with it." He recalled how, when he was coaching at Miami of Ohio in 1963, he had a Jew- ish linebacker named Mike Cohen, "captain of the foot- ball team, our top defensive player. Mike came to me one day and said, 'Coach, next Saturday is Yom Kippur and I know we have a game but I can't play. I know my parents wouldn't approve.' "I said to him, 'You can't play? What do you mean you — C'mon, how about asking them anyway, let's see if we can work this out, you know? I mean, look, you don't have to come to the team meeting, you don't have to eat the team meal, but you gotta play, Mike. This is a big game!' "So Mike asked his parents and he told me they said he could play. 'But coach,' he said, 'there's just one thing: I have to change my number.' "I said to him, 'You mean you don't think they'll know who you are the way you tackle? But okay, we'll change your number from 60 to 99. But I gotta tell the other coach.' " Zachor we wish to acknowledge our deep appreciation to its dinner par- ticipants.
