"I still can't believe I put it
together. It's wonderful,"
she says. "I'm enjoying it at
this point in my life.
"I don't believe in the
words, 'I can't.' The worst
that can happen is it doesn't
work." ❑

illiam Davis, presi-
dent of Synthesis of
Ideas, Inc. in South-
field, took the first step
toward forming a joint ven-
ture partnership with Israel
by attending a seminar this
week called Flint-Israel: A
Partnership.
"I definitely want to pursue
the possibility of doing
business with Israel," said
Mr. Davis, whose company
specializes in engineering,
software and management
consulting.
During the morning semi-
nar, sponsored in part by the
American-Israel Chamber of
Commerce, representatives
from Detroit-area companies
looking to build a working
relationship with Israel
listened to individuals discuss
the benefits of such ventures.
Deb Schneider, chairperson
of the Israel Task Force for
the Michigan Department of
Commerce, said joint ven-
tures between American and
Israeli companies have
resulted in many success
stories.
"There is tremendous op-
portunity for Michigan
businesses to team up with
Israel and gain access to new
resources," she added.
Ms. Schneider said Israel of-
fers financial trade advan-
tages and has a reputation for
producing technologies with
less capital. She said an
American company inter-
ested in forming a partner-
ship should plan a mission to
Israel to meet with groups
who share similar interests.
Joel Bainerman, economic
journalist of the Jerusalem
Post, said Israel's advanced
military provides numerous
technological opportunities
that can be adapted world-
wide.
He noted that while Israelis
develop many innovative
technologies, bureaucracy
and lack of funding often stall
their development.
"Israel is not the easiest
place to invest in because of
the political problems and
risks," he said. "However, tak-

ing technology from Israel is
probably the best way. There
is a lot of raw technology in
Israel."
Mr. Bainerman said sen-
sory brake lights are an ex-
ample of an Israeli military
technology that has been
adapted for civilian use.
"A device senses when you
lift your foot off the' gas, and
the brake light comes on a
split second before your foot
hits the brake," Mr. Bainer-
man said. He said this
technology is being introduc-
ed in Europe because of its ad-
vantage in' helping prevent
rear-end automobile
collisions.
Mark Kahn, president of
Production rIbol Supply Co.,
in Warren, said his company's
relationship with Israel
began 30 years ago, when Pro-
duction Tool Supply began
shipping tools to distributors
in Israel.
Two years ago, the two
countries established a part-
nership company, NewKut, to
market a carbide cutting
system developed in Israel.
Sales for 1990 are projected to
be $1 million.
"The fact is Israel has an
obvious commitment to quali-
ty. If you are concerned about
the country's stability, I can
say that our orders have
always been shipped on time
and well received," Mr. Kahn
said.
Eugene Broder, contract
manager of General
Fasteners in Livonia, said his
company sent him on a mis-
sion to Israel 19 months ago.
Mr. Broder said the Israeli
military showed a great in-
terest in buying products
from his company.
"They want to do business
with companies who won't do
them wrong," he said.
"There is a lot of potential
there. We are considering
opening a branch in Israel to
sell fasteners;' Mr. Broder
said.
"It is very important to help
Israel build a solid base so
they can be more self-suffi-
cient and less dependent on
foreign countries," Mr. Kahn
said. "Let's build our rela-
tionship with Israel on trade
and not aid."
