B. LEWIS PLUMBING 122 FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 1990 352-9350 American Red Cross Blood Services Southeastern Michigan Region Swampscott, Mass. (JTA) — Fred Leuchter, a self- pro- claimed scientific authority whose published report stating that "there were no execution gas chambers at Auschwitz, Majdanek and Birkenau" has been most often cited by Holocaust re- visionists, will have his credibility tested in Malden, Mass., District Court this week, when he is arraigned on charges that he fraudulently practices engi- neering. Mr. Leuchter is scheduled to be arraigned on charges that he never attended an engineering school or took a licensing examination. In the case of Mr. Leuchter, a life-long resident of Malden whose only academic credential is a bachelor's degree in history from Boston University, that shabby impersonation has had sinister consequences. It has given false credence to claims by assorted anti- n Semites, cranks and pseudo-historians of the far right that the Holocaust never occurred and is a myth concocted by Jews to extort money and sympathy from the West. According to Chip Berlet, an analyst with the Cam- bridge- based Political Research Associates, Leuchter is "dangerous" be- cause he is being touted as a researcher who uses "scientific objectivity to disprove the Holocaust." The bespectacled 46-year- old "expert" was hired by neo- Nazi propagandist Ern- st Zundel, the German-born Toronto printer tried under Canada's anti-hate laws for publishing and distributing the Holocaust revisionist book, Did Six Million Really Die? With $35,000 provided by Mr. Zundel, Mr. Leuchter traveled to Poland where he claims to have inspected three former concentration camps. The result of that trip was "The Leuchter Report: the End of a Myth," which states with an air of unassailable authority that "There were no execution gas chambers at Auschwitz, Majdanek and Birkenau." Mr. Leuchter has a dis- arming personality at odds with his grisly business. He is chief executive officer of the only company in the United States that spe- cializes in the development and construction of execu- tion machinery for states that have capital punish- ment. His company provides gallows at $85,000 each; electric chairs for $35,000; and computerized lethal in- jection machines which he sells for $30,000. Mr. Leuchter has sold lethal injection machines to New Jersey, Delaware, Il- linois and Missouri, while his electrocution "systems" have been purchased by In- diana, South Carolina, Ten- nessee and Alabama. But faced with outraged reaction to his report by elected officials and Jewish and other groups, Mr. Leuchter's pre-eminence in the execution field may be on the wane. Last month Illinois voided a $26,000 contract for a lethal injection machine. The state acted after an expose of Leuchter's Holo- caust revisionism by Chicago's WMAQ-TV trig- gered a lobbying campaign by survivor groups and their friends with the state Department of Corrections to break the contract. Communities Report Thefts Trebic, Czechoslovakia (JTA) — Jewish com- munities in Czechoslovakia have reported a series of thefts of valuable religious artifacts from synagogues and other Jewish institu- tions. The most recent was the -pillage of ceremonial objects from the synagogue in Brno, in Moravia. Arnost Neufeld, president of the Jewish community there who is visiting nearby Trebic, said the theft occurred within the past month. He said the stolen objects are probably worth 10 times the official $3,300 estimate, not to mention their historical and emotional value. Dr. Arno Parik, head of the Jewish Museum in Prague, said the theft of Jewish ritual objects has become so commonplace that he has alerted collectors of Judaica. Christian houses of wor- ship have also been robbed, and the crime rate in Czechoslovakia in fact has soared since the ouster of the Communist regime last year.
