PROJECT DISCOVERY
Fellowship Set
For School Projects
New York (JTA) — United
Synagogue of America is
prepared to contribute up to
$2,000 for student-developed
projects on North American
college campuses aimed at
advancing Conservative
Judaism.
The KOACH Creative
Grant Fellowships were an-
nounced by Rabbi Pamela
Hoffman, director of KOACH,
the newly established United
Synagogue department for
college-age programming.
Fellowships will be awarded
to programs which contribute
to the creative presentation of
Conservative Judaism on
campus.
A brochure describing the
program offers several ideas,
including a "Bring Shabbat
to the Dorm" project,
establishing a KOACH bayit
on campus, and adopting a
newly arrived Soviet family.

Israel has always been a special place to me. I never understood why until February 1990, through
Project Discovery. After waiting a year, the time to travel to Jerusalem, Israel, for a semester of study
at Tichon Ramah Yerushalayim has arrived. I was excited, yet nervous. I would be away for four and
a half months. What would happen to me? The best possible thing happened; I fell in love. I fell in
love with the land, the people, the history, and the culture. Israel helped me to change and to grow
up. It taught me to believe in myself and to trust my instincts.
I learned quite a bit in Israel . . . One class session concerning the fall of the fortress of Massada
was held atop Mount Massada. Another class session concerning the construction of King Solomon's
Temple was held at an archaeological site behind the Western Wall. As my knowledge of the land
and the people grew, so did my respect. The heroic actions of the Israelis during the 1967 Six Day
War refined my perception of the Western Wall. This holiest of places in the Jewish faith has become
a symbol to me of the Jewish people's existence throughout time. I experienced the awe of that wall.
I now feel the pride of the land within myself everytime I think of Israel.
Living away from home was helpful in my maturing process. I learned self-reliance. There were
many difficult decisions to be made, and I had to make them for myself. I was able to communicate
and live in a country where I could not speak the language. I developed a sense of independence that
told me I can do anything I set my mind to do. Sharing a dorm with thirty-three other people my age
taught me to be tolerant. We were from different parts of the United States and Canada. Everyone
had different likes and dislikes; we learned to compromise. I left Israel older and wiser.
I experienced many things during the four and a half months I lived in Israel. I still feel the pride
of the country I can now call my own. I now feel the respect of a people I once knew nothing about.
In Israel, I experienced first hand the history of my people. But most of all, I grew up. I now have
the self-confidence and determination to stand up for what I believe in and change the world!
