ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER'S
historic Shearith Israel con-
gregation in New York City.
Of special interest, par-
ticularly for Yankee Jewish
travelers, are the displays
related to Jewish participa-
tion in the Confederacy. For
four years, Richmond was
capital of the Confederacy
and its Jewish citizens active-
ly supported the cause. By
1861, fifteen of the 99
members of the Richmond
Blues were Jewish.
Local Jews were proud that
one of their own was a
leading member of the Con-
federacy. Judah P. Benjamin,
often known as the "brains of
the Confederacy," held three
different cabinet posts in Jef-
ferson Davis' government.
Even today, he's a hero in
Richmond: bookstore win-
dows prominently display the
latest biography of Benjamin.
Beth Ahabah's archives in-
clude photographs and
documents about this Con-
federate leader.
Among Beth Ahabah's
documents is a letter from
Robert E. Lee to the Reverend
M.J. Michelbacher, the Beth
Ahabah rabbi who served as
unofficial military chaplain
to the Confederate Jewish
soldiers, who wrote to Lee re-
questing that Jewish soldiers
be given leave on religious
holidays.
But Lee denied the request,
explaining in his letter: "It
can't be known on what day
the presence of every man
may not be required. I feel
that neither you nor any
member of the Jewish con-
gregation would wish to
jeapordize a Cause you have
so much at heart by the
withdrawal even for a day of
a portion of its defenders."
Though the Confederacy
was, indeed, a cause they took
to heart, when the South lost
the Civil War, the Jews, like
other Richmonders, went on
to become active in national
causes, and Beth Ahabah's
rabbis illustrate that ac-
tivism. Edward Nathan
Calisch was several times
chosen to deliver orations at
the Tomb of the Unknown
Soldier at Arlington. Ariel
Goldberg won the Virginia
Cultural Laureate Award,
and his medal is on display.
The current rabbi, Jack Spiro,
serves as Director of Judaic
Studies at Virginia Common-
wealth University.
Still this is a Jewish com-
munity steeped in Southern
tradition, including the Con-
federate legacy — and one
place that reveals that most
eloquently is the Hebrew
cemetery at 5th and Hospital
Streets.
This was the city's second
Jewish burial ground, in use
