any, Jews, said Ms.
Neckritz, who explained
that Operation Magic
Carpet — Israel's 1949 res-
cue of thousands of
Yemenite Jews — left most
of the Jewish community in
the northern part of the
country.
Adding to Ms. Neckritz's
sense of isolation were in-
cidents of anti-Semitism and
the intense propaganda
against Israel. While so-
cializing, Ms. Neckritz
would hear Jews attacked as
cheap or money- grubbing or
land-grabbing.
Sometimes, while walking
through campus, she would
see anti- Israel posters
plastered on trees and
windows by supporters of the
Palestine Liberation Organ-
ization.
The incidents of anti-
Semitism happened only "a
few times," said Ms.
Neckritz, "but it happened a
few times too many" to leave
her feeling comfortable.
Against this background,
she made her first visit to
Sadaa, a small village in the
north of Yemen.
Ms. Neckritz, who traveled
to Sadaa with other vol-

life in Yemen to look for
people working in jewelry,
one of the few occupations
open to the country's Jews.
Other Yemenite Jews are
engaged in basketweaving,
shoemaking and the baking
of bread.
But Ms. Neckritz — aware
of the Moslem guards sta-
tioned outside of Sadaa's
Jewish-owned stores — con-
tinued to keep her own Jew-
ishness a secret.
Each of the guards
eavesdrops on conversations
"and makes sure that
nothing is said that he
doesn't want to be said," Ms.
Neckritz said, explaining
that verboten subjects in-
clude living conditions and
freedom of religion.
She made her second visit
to Sadaa in the company of a
Dutch woman, who, accor-
ding to Ms. Neckritz, had
been acting on her own for
nine years as a courier of
messages between Yemenite
Jews and their relatives in
Israel.
The two met after Ms.
Neckritz accompanied her
class to a dance contest and
saw a group of Moslem
students unknowingly danc-
