athlete and coach. Bayer,
who succeeded Berris as a
Wayne captain, served as di-
rector of Herm Fishman's
Camp Michigama "and over
the years had a tremendous
influence with a lot of young
kids back then," said son
Bob Bayer. Among them was
the current JCC varsity
basketball coach, Barry Ber-
shad.
Bob said Cubby coached
Bob's junior JCC team to the
Center's Class A champion-
ship "probably . . . because
he taught us the pick-and-
roll. It's very difficult to
defend and, for high school
kids to play it well was just
great. It seemed like we'd
have a man open under the
basket all the time," said
Bob.
He recalled finding a
Detroit Times article by the
Tigers' Mickey Cochrane in
his father's old scrapbook.
Cochrane "was writing
about a young athlete he's
met, the finest all-around
athlete he's ever met, and I
realize he's talking about
my father," said Bob.
The elder Bayer, who
played on three consecutive
Northern High city cham-
pionship teams in the early
1930s, was a Wayne starter,
like Berris, becoming the
team's playmaker and high
scorer. He also was on the
1936 Point-A-Minute team
in the trials.
In the late 1930s, Bayer
also started on the four-time
world champion Briggs
Beautyware fast-pitch soft-
ball team.
After college, Bayer played
for Cincy Sachs' Detroit
Eagles, the city's first pro-
fessional basketball team. In
World War II, Bayer served
as director of his Alameda,
Calif., Naval Base's athletic
program and was
player/coach of the base
team that, in 1943, was
ranked among the collegiate
top 10 nationally.
Bayer was a physical edu-
cation instructor and school
principal for 40 years. "He
was a principal at times
when race relations in the
city were very difficult,"
recalled his son. "In most
cases, the people wanted
black administrators in the
black neighborhoods, but he

borhood that they insisted"

"The thing I'm most proud
of," said Bob Bayer, "is that
never does someone just
come up and say .what a
great athlete my dad was.
They all say what a great
person he was.
"Bill Serman talks about
my father as if he was his
father. Dad coached Serman
to the state baseball cham-
pionship. 'The man never
swore, never had a bad thing
to say about anybody,' Bill
told me. 'He was not only a
tremendous athlete, but also
a great person and you
should be most proud of
that.' And that's what I am
proudest of."
Bayer, who also was a top-
notch tennis player and
golfer, died in 1986. He left
wife Betsey and another son,
John; a third son, Dan, died
at age 12.
