Metzger Victory
Affects Jews

Portland, Ore. (JTA) —
The ruling last week by an
Oregon jury that white
supremacist Tom Metzger
and his son, John, were
responsible for the 1988
skinhead murder of
Mulugeta Seraw, an Ethio-
pian national, have par-
ticular meaning to the Jew-
ish community, according to
the director of civil rights for
the Anti-Defamation League
of B'nai B'rith.
Foremost in the mind of
Jeffrey Sinensky, who
helped represent the plain-
tiffs in the case, is the crippl-
ing effect the decision will
have on the anti-Semitic
operations of Metzger's
organization: White Aryan
Resistance, or WAR.
A Multnomah County Cir-
cuit Court jury, after voting
11-1 in finding the Metzgers
liable, assessed $12.5 mill-
ion in damages against
them, their organization and
two of the skinheads in-
volved in the beating. The
verdict was announced after
five hours of deliberation on
Monday, following an eight-
and-a-half- day trial.
Mr. Metzger, a 52-year-old
television repairman from
Fallbrook, Calif., vowed to
appeal, but it is believed
doubtful that he can muster
the $5 million required for
an appeals bond.

Wins Awards

Detroit's Jewish Welfare
Federation won three awards
in the Council of Jewish
Federations' 1990 public rela-
tions' awards competition.
Federation's Communica-
tions Department won a gold
award for its 1989 annual
report. It received a silver
award for invitations and a
bronze award for its newslet-
ter, "Community Currents."
Entries were judged in nine
different categories:
newspapers, newsletters,
newspaper advertising, in-
vitations, special brochures,
campaign brochures, annual
reports, worker training kits
and posters.

is chairman of the CJF Public
Relations Awards Committee.
A total of 77 Federations from
throughout North America
will receive Awards for Ex-
cellence in Public Relations
during the 59th CJF General
Assembly Nov. 13-18 in San
