mean anything," he adds. "When they sing a Jewish song, it's part of their legacy. It gives them a sense of pride and hope." Like the other advisers, Mr. Phillips wasn't hired for GLTY until he survived a lengthy interview. Experi- ence with teen alters was re- quired, and he had to answer questions about the kind of role he saw for himself with the students. "We didn't want somebody who would just be their good friend," Mr. Nosanchuk ex- plains. "We wanted people to guide these kids." He also wanted advisers committed to Judaism who didn't view college study as their time off. "There are many, many students here (at. MSU) apathetic about Judaism," Mr. Nosanchuk says. But I don't consider college time a break from religion. It's my pet peeve when people say, 'I'm goincr to wait until I'm a parent to b develop my Jewish identity.' " Serving as a GLTY adviser means much more than at- tending events and coor- dinating programs, Mr. Nosanchuk says. Often, the students will call advisers to discuss problems at home or what's going on at school. "That's the best," Mr. Nosanchuk says. "They'll call and I'll say, 'Do you want to discuss an upcoming event?' and they'll say, 'No, I just want to talk.' " When he returned last September to MSU, Mr. Nosanchuk and other GLTY advisers decided to expand the group to junior high students, forming GLTY Ju- nior. "I was really nervous," Mr. Nosanchuk admits. "You only get one first time for everybody." But the group has gotten off to a good start. GLTY Ju- nior's first event attracted 30 students, who are in the midst of planning a series of fun activities, like ice- skating parties, and com- munity programs, like recycling projects. "Middle school was the most difficult time in my own life; there were so many choices," Mr. Nosanchuk says. "What we're trying to do in GLTY Junior is help these kids make some of those choices — like learning that fun means GLTY Junior, not getting high or loaded." Rob Nosanchuk is con- sidering attending Hebrew Union College-Jewish In- stitute of Religion after he graduates with a degree in humanities next year. He thinks he might like to be a rabbi. And he certainly wants to continue his work with Jewish youth. "After GLTY kids leave high school, I still hear from them," he says. A lot want to discuss college plans. Mr. Nosanchuk is always available for the students. Any time, any place. "I tell them, 'You call me whenever, . ' " he says. "I make that my policy." ❑ WINTER CLEARANCE 500 T OFF Mini-Museum For Children The Maple-Drake Jewish Community Center has open- ed "The Discovery Room: A Jewish Experience."
