Through NFTY conven- tions, GLTY members have made friends with Jewish youth nationwide. "And that means parents- have to pay phone bills for the kids to call their friends all over the country," Mr. Nosenchuk say. He keeps the level of ac- tivity high. Between meetings and regular pro- grams come special gather- ings, regional weekends and MSTY events. In the summer, kids — and ad- visers — are encouraged to attend NFTY camps. One of the students' cen- tral concerns is social issues, Mr. Nosanchuk says. In ad- dition to the Chanukah and Purim parties, one of GLTY's major programs is Mitzvah Day, when they perform odd jobs around town in exchange for dona- tions to worthy causes. GLTY members also decided to support the East Lansing Economic Crisis Center, which aids the homeless. GLTY plans to refurbish a children's playroom at the center. "The neat thing about high school kids is that they're very concerned about the world," Mr. Nosanchuk says. At GLTY, "you're just not cool unless you're for so- cial justice and spirituality." Students also plan Friday night services, where ser- mons regularly focus on in- dividuality and social action, and "shul-ins," where they stay overnight at the local synagogue. "There's nothing I love like hearing a kid answer the question, 'What are you doing on Friday night?' with, 'I'm going to a shul- in,' Mr. Nosanchuk says. The kids are at the center of all events. he says. The advisers' responsibility is to show the students their potential — not to tell them how to manage their own programs. "You give the kids certain guidelines and advice and they'll shine," Mr. Nosan- chuk says. "I give them credit for almost everything GLTY does." Tracy Welch, a 12th grader in East Lansing, came to the group on- the recommendation of her older sister, also once a GLTY member. Tracy, who recent- ly organized her first statewide ,conclave, says she enjoys GLTY because "I really like getting together with Jewish friends. It gives me a different perspective." GLTY Junior member Danny Glickman, an 8th grader in Okemos, decided to join up after he heard Mr. Nosanchuk speak at his temple about the group. Danny knows a youth group sounds like the last thing in the world a junior high student would want to join, "but everybody likes it," he says. "It's because the people who run it are college guys." Working side-by-side with Rob Nosanchuk is Danny Phillips, GLTY song leader. From a family active in youth groups, Mr. Phillips, of Southfield, was inspired to take up the guitar after he went to Kutz Camp, a NFTY camp in Warwick, N.Y. "I was so impressed by everybody singing and danc- ing," • he says. "I wanted to make a crowd feel what I'd felt." Mr. Phillips teaches the students NFTY songs as well as more traditional Jewish music. "A lot of times, we give kids their first experience with prayer," he says.
