DESIGNERS'
SHOWCASE

The Junior League of Detroit
invited local designers
to showcase a
Grosse Pointe mansion.

1119he Junior League of Detroit
never does anything in a
junior fashion. The 1990
designers' showhouse in
_
Grosse Pointe Park is nothing less
than spectacular. Over 26,000
Detroiters viewed this home last
spring. For the Oakland County
residents, who may have missed this
elegant private residence, Style
magazine presents an exclusive tour.
This Thclor mansion, with 33 rooms,
16 baths, seven fireplaces and six
staircases, is patterned after an
English manor home and called
Bellmor. Above the garage there is
a seven room apartment for the ser-
vants. The home could easily be the
setting for Emily Bronte's novel

Wuthering Heights.

HOME

Bellmor is located on Windmill
Pointe Dr., the site of a historic bat-
tle between the French settlers and
the Indians in 1712. The backyard is
on Lake St. Clair, which offers spec-
tacular boating privileges.
Bellmor was built in 1928 for John
Bell Moran and his wife, Seena Mur-
phy Moran. The home was designed
by architect Robert 0. Derrick and
constructed by Smith, Hinchman and
Gryllis.
Since Mr. Moran was French and his
wife was Irish, there are many French
and Irish themes in this English Thdor
home. The two coats of arms for each
of the families are on the staircase

windows. Fleur-de-lis and Irish rose
patterns are carved into the living
room ceiling. The stained glass, wood
and masonry are elaborate.
The Junior League invited 28
designers to decorate this home,
which is probably the largest
showcase project in the metropolitan
Detroit area. The Junior League uses
the monies raised from this project
for their community programs which
include revitalization, substance
abuse, hospice education, historic
preservation and other charitable
causes.
As Style magazine goes to press,
Bellmoor is for sale with Coldwell-
Banker Schweitzer Real Estate Inc., in
Grosse Pointe Woods. The asking
price . . . $2,000,000.
