Yves Saint Laurent's Normandy gar-
dens. An article on trompe l'oeil pain-
ting, in which artists fool the eye with
faux finishes, takes the reader on a
fantasy journey of fake marble col-
umns and unreal skylines.
Subsequent issues travel to Tiffany
jewelry designer Elsa Peretti's villa in
Spain, to the isle of Corsica to a home
designed by architect Boguslaw Brez-
ecklowski, and to a Manhattan town-
house by Michael Graves.
Every issue has a resource guide so
readers can find out where to pur-
chase items directly. This is similar to
fashion magazines that credit store
names at the back of the issue.
The layouts and photos are big,
bold and colorful. "We take a fashion
approach to photography," Mr. Gropp
says. The current September issue
shows full-page closeups of large
stoves, bright quilts, and translucent
glass in three different stories.
Polly Perkins, publisher of Elle
Decor, explains that the magazine
does not dictate fashion, but gives the
reader options. It's a magazine with
a successful track record that is not
feeling weak in the market. Indeed,
according to Mr. Gropp, "We are feel-
ing gutsy."
