want by planning ahead. And you can
itemize your appliances and cabinet
costs separately." He advises
customers to order their appliances
way in advance, and to coordinate
their delivery with the builder or
contractor.
Steven Margolin of Linwood Pipe
and Supply in Detroit is the largest
Kohler and Delta distributors in the
state. He notes a common error peo-
ple make is ordering a sink without
determining how many holes they're
going to need for the spray, instan-
thot, lotion dispenser, etc.
All of the experts agree that the
best ways to keep costs down are by
planning and through material
substitution. "Costs are kept down by
the materials chosen," says Mr. Fisher.
Lane Joanis, President of Bever-
ly Hills Kitchen and Bath in Birm-
ingham, concurs. "The only place to
cut costs is by downgrading pro-
ducts," says Mr. Joanis. For example,
all Corian countertops are less than
granite tops; all formica are even less
than that. Many people compromise
by having formica countertops with
a granite-topped island. Laminate
cabinets can save money versus
wood cabinets. And your appliance
choices can fit into a wid range.
"To keep your costs down, you
really must be honest with the
salesperson so that he can direct you
to the line that works best for you,"
says Hawthorne's Johnson.
"But it's hard, because there are so
many wonderful options," says Ms.
Lipsitt. "A lot of people go over
budget."
