Yiddish Films
On Video

Ergo Media Inc. of Teaneck,
N.J., is releasing three Yid-
dish film classics on
videocassette. These were
filmed in the United States
between 1937 and 1939.
The three films were based
on dramatic masterpieces
that played in the Yiddish
theater in North America and
Europe. Tevye, made in 1939
by Maurice Schwartz, is bas-
ed on the same material writ-
ten by Yiddish writer Sholom
Aleichem as was Fiddler on
the Roof. It stars Leon
Liebgold, Miriam Riselle and
Mr. Schwartz as Tevye. Green
Fields was directed in 1937 by
Edgar G. Ulmer and Jacob
Ben-Ami and is based on the
pastoral romance written by
Peretz Hirschbein; the film
stars Michael Goldstein (Gor-
rin) and Helen Beverly (Mrs.
Lee J. Cobb) and features a
young Herschel Bernardi.
Mirele Efros was directed by
Josef Berne in 1939 and
features performances by Ber-
ta Gersten, Michael
Rosenberg and Ruth Elbaum;
the film is based on the Jacob
Gordin play performed in the
Yididsh theater. Each
videocassette jacket features
the film's original full-color
poster dating back to the
1930s.
Ergo Media has also an-
nounced the release on video
of the Israeli film classic,
Sallah, written and directed
by Ephraim Kishon and star-
ring Topol. Topol, who is
known for his portrayal of
Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof
is on a U.S. tour with that
stage production. Sallah was
the winner of the Golden
Globe Award for Best Foreign
Film of 19.64 and was
nominated for an Academy
Award in the Best Foreign
Language Picture category. It
also garnered two Golden
Gate Awards at the San Fran-
cisco Film Festival.
