Local Columnist
H
e's been honored
many times, but no
kudos meant more to
television producer Michael
Krause than the one he
recently received . . . even
though it was 17 years in
coming.
Back in 1973, the then
34-year-old former localite
graduate of Mumford High
and Wayne State U. who was
already a television wonder
(he had produced and/or
created ABC-TV's "The Mor-
ning Show" in Detroit, "The
Presenters" and "The Mike
Douglas Show") took all of
eight days to conceive, plan,
write and produce the entire
"Israel Emergency Fund
Telethon."
The program raised a
record-setting $3.5 million in
only 4 1/2 hours, with an add-
ed $500,000 logged in after
the show left the air . . . big
bucks in those days.
Then in 1975, Mike put on
another telethon for Israel,
raising an added $7 million.
The 20-year-old Council For
A Beautiful Israel award
presenter is an international,
non-political organization
whose purpose is to improve
Israel's quality of life through
social, environmental and
beautification programs.
Michael, son of Joie and the
late Burnett Krause, received
"The Beautiful Israel Award"
Oct. 17 along with Nobel
Prize-winning author Elie
Wiesel at the 12th annual
dinner in New York's Pierre
Hotel.
You'll be on target with the
saying about local boy mak-
ing good . . . He's married to
the beautiful and talented
Joan Lunden, and Mike also
is creator, executive producer
and syndicator of "Everyday"
that hosts Joan . . . This plus
formerly being producer of
NBC News' "Today," ABC's
"Good Morning America,"
"A.M. New York," "The
Stanley Siegal Show,"
"Mother's Day" and the
prime time special, "Our
Kids and The Best of
Everything" . . . among
many.
"Maybe it was everyone
telling me it couldn't be done
that kept me going," says
Mike. "But I just really
wanted to put my talents to
work helping Israel. I've
never been there, but
something in my soul said I
had to help." . . . That, he cer-
tainly did.
IN 1957, Jack Milen open-
ed his first Jax Kar Wash on
Six Mile and Meyers . . . It
isn't a Jax today, but number
two opened in 1956, still is on
Hunter Boulevard.
Thirty-seven years, and Jax
has opened its 11th location,
recently taking over Ray's
Auto Wash on Rochester Road
in Rochester Hills.
While Jack still makes
himself visible as a guy so
many people like, son Bruce
is owner of Jax Kar Wash and
carrying on dad's wonderful
humanitarian work.
He is one of the two
chairmen of the "Fifties Sock
Hop" tonight at Somerset
Inn, Troy, by American
Cancer Society . . . Tickets

need much to be proud of his
children, and here's another
to give him more glory .. .

Currently at work on her
dissertation, "A Rhetorical
Analysis of the New Age
Movement," she is program
planner for her panel, the
first ever accepted for presen-
tation on the New Age in the
organization's 76 years . . .
quite an exciting feat.
Micky credits Lou for in-
troducing her to the study of
paranormal . . . He has been
studying the subject for over
30 years . . . Dad and other
family members will travel to
Chicago for the presentation
and cheer Micky on.
SHE CELEBRATED her

Jan Kladzyk knows how .. .
