talked mostly about Rep.
Schuette, who he said was
lodging a "personal attack
on me, associating me direct-
ly with the savings and loan
crisis."
There are, of course, .dif-
ferences and similarities
between the two candidates.
Rep. Schuette is pro-life,
Sen.- Levin is pro-choice; the
incumbent is against capital
punishment, while Mr.
Schuette favors it. The
challenger is an advocate of
the Strategic Defense In-
itiative (the so-called Star
Wars defense against mis-
sile attack); the senator is
against it. There are at least
two areas they have in com-
mon. They both are staun-
chly pro-Israel, and they
both are accusing the other
of campaign mud-slinging.
While talking about the
Bush Administration's
"weak" trade policy, a policy
he said has done nothing but
hurt Michigan, the buzzer
announced that Sen. Levin
had to return to the Senate
floor.
"Son-y," he said. "It's the
way this entire campaign
has been for me. I've got to
go."

secured 40 percent of the
votes against a long-
standing incumbent. "I
knew he was vulnerable.
"When times get tough, I
don't always have
somewhere to go," Mr.
Leland says, referring to his
community of Catholics,
Baptists, black and Polish
people.
He points to the highly
publicized issue of abortion
rights, saying his heavily
Democratic district is filled
with pro-life voters.
"My philosophy is that I
believe in a woman's right to
choose," Mr. Leland says.
"I've been told to leave
Catholic parishes because of
this."
Mr. Leland starts his van
and takes a quick drive
through the district. His
neighborhood is filled with
beautifully landscaped
Tudor, Cape Cod and Vic-
torian style homes, each
sporting manicured lawns.
Some are built with cut
fieldstone. Most are brick.
Yet just down the road is
Brightmoor, a neighborhood
Mr. Leland calls Detroit's
worst travesty. The streets
are filled with boarded up and
half-burnt houses. ❑
