undertook a complete renova-
tion of its historic temple. For
the exterior, it means restor-
ing the original colors of the
terra cotta tile — "and there
were 200 colors in all," Rabbi
Staitman maid. The interior,
too, was completely restored.
In the domed sanctuary, the
chandeliers, sconces and wood
panelling have all been refur-
bished and so has the historic
organ. "It's one of 19 national
historic organs, and the
largest Kimball organ of that
period in existence," Rabbi
Staitman said.
Rodef Shalom's facilities in-
clude a Judaica museum in
the education building. The
collection includes the na-
tion's first memorial to
Kristallnacht: a replica of
windows from a synagogue in
Essen, Germany, which were
shattered on the night the
Nazis broke glass in
numerous synagogues in
Germany.
Outside the synagogue is
the Biblical Botanical
Garden, the only one of its
kind in Pennsylvania. Land-
scaped to resemble the shape
of Israel, it includes plants,
flowers, trees, plus a fountain
and waterfall. "We have over
100 different species," says
Irene Jacob, co-founder and
director of the garden.
All of the plants in the
garden are specifically men-
tioned in the Bible or have
names derived from the Bible.
And all are carefully labeled.
Much of the research was
done by Ms. Jacob, a hor-
ticulturalist and author who
served as Education Director
of the Phipps Conservatory in
Pittsburgh and has written a
guide to the Biblical
Botanical Garden.
She and her husband,
Senior Rabbi Walter Jacob,
established the garden four
years ago. It now draws over
4,000 visitors a year during
the brief time it's open: from
June 1 to Sept. 15. It's only
open for this short time, ex-
plains Ms. Jacob, because one
third of the plants are
tropical, and fall comes ear-
ly in western Pennsylvania.
"We get visitors from all
over the United States and
from abroad," Ms. Jacob said.
While some come because of
the garden's reputation,
others are surprised to
discover it. "Some people
have no idea that such a
garden is here," the director
said. "And they're delighted
to find it."
Other Jewish travelers are
pleased to discover that on
one of Pittsburgh's many hills
is an old-fashioned Jewish
neighborhood. In this city of
ethnic areas, Squirrel Hill is
the city's Jewish one.
