Chicago Offices
Are Vandalized

Chicago (JTA) — Four
teen-agers have been ar-
rested on suspicion of van-
dalizing three Chicago Jew-
ish institutions here last
weekend.
The K.I.N.S. Congregation
of West Rogers Park, the of-
fices of the Religious
Zionists of Chicago and The
Ark, a Jewish federation so-
cial service agency serving
the poor, were spray-painted
with a Palestinian flag.
Other graffiti included a
missile labeled "Iraq" aimed
at a shattered Jewish star
and slogans such as "PLO
Love" and "Jew killer."
Mohammed Ghanimah,
17, Majdi Khalil, 18, and
Tasir Yasin, 18, all of
Chicago, and Jimmy
Samhan, of suburban Oak
Lawn, were charged with in-
stitutional vandalism, a
felony. Bail was set at
$15,000 each, and a
preliminary hearing is
scheduled for Nov. 9. The
suspects face jail terms if
convicted.
The suspects were arrested
in a neighborhood restau-
rant after witnesses de-
scribed their vehicle to
police and gave its license
number.

The police said all four
confessed, saying they corn-
mitted the acts in retaliation
for the killing of 21 Palestin-
ians by Israeli police during
an Arab riot on the Temple
Mount in east Jerusalem on
Oct. 8.
The synagogue estimates
the damage at $18,000, and
The Ark believes it can
sandblast the graffiti away
for $4,850. The Zionist office
has given no estimate.
The latest incident was the
worst in Chicago since Nov.
10, 1987, when vandals
damaged three North Side
synagogues and 10 busi-
nesses on the 49th anniver-
sary of Kristallnacht.
"When I saw the van-
dalism, I felt the outrage and
the frustration that the Jews
at the Western Wall must
have felt last week when the
stones cascaded down on
them," said Rabbi Paul
Greenman of the K.I.N.S.
Congregation.
"I cannot even imagine the
chutzpah of people who at-
tack places of worship. In my
opinion, this serves to prove
that the PLO is not just
waging a war against Israel,
it is waging a war against all
Jews," the rabbi said.

More Jews Are
Dying In Ethiopia

Jerusalem — The number
of Ethiopian Jews who have
died in the last four months
in Addis Ababa is double
that reported by the Israel
Embassy there, a local Ethi-
opian activist said this week.
The embassy said that 152
Jews, 70 per cent of them
children, have died in the E-
thiopian capital since June.
But Addisu Messele, the
head of the local Umbrella
Organization for Ethiopian
Jews, placed the number at
300.
Messele attributed this
discrepancy to the fact that
not all Jews bury their dead
in the Jewish Yemenite
cemetery in Addis Ababa, or
inform the embassy. He said
the bureaucratic process in-
volved in burying the dead
in the cemetery and register-
ing the burial with the em-
bassy often takes several
days. Therefore, many Jews
bury their dead elsewhere
and do not notify the Israeli
authorities.
Rahamim Elazar, the sec-

retary general of the um-
brella organization, who
returned from a three-week
visit to Ethiopia earlier this
month, said that the Jews
are dying of malnutrition
and inadequate medical
care. He praised a recent
Jewish Agency decision to
send three doctors to the re-
gion to augment the two al-
ready there, but he said this
was "too little and too late."
Speaking at a press con-
ference in Jerusalem, Mr.
Elazar and Mr. Messele
called upon the Israel
government to do more to
compel the Ethiopian
government to free the Jews.
They accused the Israel
government of not placing
the Ethiopian issue high
enough on its agenda.
They say that although
500 Ethiopian Jews im-
migrated to Israel monthly
between March and May,
this number has now slowed
to a trickle. Only 200 Jews
have arrived here since the
end of July.
