community has numerous
tours and missions to Israel,
but has only once attempted
a trip on a grand scale as
have other communities.
The idea is to have hundreds
of people from a community
travel together, sending a
message of solidarity to
Israel while creating a
strong bond among the
visitors themselves.
The conventional wisdom
is that if you convince some-
one to visit Israel, he will be
an advocate for the rest of
his life. That is why some
federations have created
these Super Missions,
expanding their network of
supporters, rather than just
concentrating on providing
trips for their big givers.
True, some federations
around the country have
canceled missions in recent
weeks, due to the high
number of cancellations and
fear of a Mideast war (see
Page 5). They say that this is
not a good time to plan such
a mission.
But in a way there is never
a good time. Israel is always
a flash point; yet it has also
always been a safe place to
visit. Those who are most
fearful are those who have
never been. And that is
precisely why we need to
promote and sponsor
tourism to Israel on a large
scale.
Israel wants and deserves
our presence as well as our
support, and we as Jews
need to be there.

Jailed Soldier
Will Not Serve

The first
Tel Aviv (JTA)
career officer in the Israeli
army to refuse to serve in
the administered territories
was jailed last week for 35
days in a military stockade.
Lt. Nir Keinan, 22, of
Jerusalem, deputy com-
mander of the crack Golani
Brigade, reportedly called
his soldiers together to tell
them of his resolve to refuse
an order to serve in Gaza.
Lt. Keinan previously
served several terms in the
West Bank and Gaza Strip.
He reportedly told his com-
pany that he had qualms for
some time about serving in
the territories and finally
decided to refuse an order.
Lt. Keinan is believed to
be the 125th soldier jailed
for refusing such service.
