Kosher Butcher
Drops inspections

ALAN HITSKY

Associate Editor

T

he Detroit Area Retail
Kosher Meat Dealers
Association, which
represents two of Detroit's
10 kosher butcher shops, has
dropped its relationship with
the Metropolitan Kashruth
Council of Michigan, leaving
both local meat markets
without kosher supervision.
Meat Dealers Association
President Allan Cohen said
his group is dropping its
association with the Council
because Kashruth Council
President Rabbi Jack
Goldman is trying to include
the meat dealers in his
lawsuit against the Council
of Orthodox Rabbis (Va'ad).
Rabbi Goldman is suing
the Va'ad for a statement in
its 1988 Rosh Hashanah
newsletter calling the Va'ad
the "chartered . . . authority
for kosher certification in
Michigan." The case was fil-
ed in Oakland County Cir-
cuit Court in February 1989.
But Rabbi Goldman said
the dispute with the Associ-
ation arose after he heard
that his inspections at New
Orleans Kosher Meats were

being labeled supervision.
Rabbi Goldman described
his inspections as periodic,
unannounced visits to the
store to ensure the meat sold
comes from kosher sources.
He said he has inspected
.New Orleans Kosher Meat
ever since the Council of Or-
thodox Rabbis halted super-
vision after accusing the
store of selling non-kosher
meat.
As a result of the Meat
Dealers' Association deci-
sion to end its association
with Rabbi Goldman, the
New Orleans Kosher Meats
store in Southfield has no
kashrut inspection or super-
vision.
The second store affiliated
with the Meat Dealers
union, Bernard and Son in
Farmington Hills, has not
been supervised or inspected
by a rabbinical group since
the Council of Orthodox
Rabbis dropped its supervi-
sion several years ago when
the store was accused of sell-
ing non-kosher meat.
Mr. Cohen, former owner
of New Orleans Kosher
Meats, said he has asked to
meet with the Michigan
Board of Rabbis to explain
the Associati on's position. ❑
