Beach, Fla., died Oct. 4. She
is survived by her husband,
Irving; sons, Irving and
Joseph of New York and In-
dianapolis; sister, Melba
Lieber of Farmington Hills;
six grandchildren.
FREDA ROSS, 83, of
Chicago, died Oct. 23. She
leaves her son and daughter-
in-law, Sheldon and Lois of
West Bloomfield; four grand-
children; four great-grand-
children. Services and inter-
ment in Chicago.
DAVID B. SMITH, 82, of
West Bloomfield, died Oct. 15.
He leaves his wife, 'Ilene;
daughter and son-in-law,
Susan and Steven Gross of
Westfield, N.J.; brother, Irv-
ing of Pikesville, Md.; sisters,
Fan Srere of Southfield, Ger-
trude Resnick of Southfield;
three grandchildren.
ETABEL SWITZKY, 80 of
Toledo, formerly of Detroit,
died Oct. 17. She leaves her
daughter and son-in-law,
Sharon and Allan Marks of
Sylvania, Ohio; brother and
sister-in-law, Dr. Max and
Myrtle Winslow of Southfield;
nine grandchildren; two
great-grandchildren. Services
and interment in Detroit.
RUTH WEISS, 73, of Farm-
ington Hills, died Oct. 18. She
leaves her daughter and son-
in-law, Barbara and Raymond
Burgy of Farmington Hills;
sisters, Gertrude Gurwin of
Southfield, Molly Rank of
Oak Park; five grandchildren;
two great-grandchildren.
Harry Okrent, 77 ,
Thal Lawyer
Harry Okrent went to the
defense of a Detroit woman
accused of being a Nazi spy in
1944. It was against many
protests of lifelong Jewish
friends.
Yet he believed in her in-
nocence. For that and for the
manner in which he handled
his cases, Mr. Okrent, 77, who
died Oct. 21, was widely
regarded as a fiercely commit-
ted trial lawyer. He had a
reputation for being a lawyer
who was unafraid of tackling
any case.
Mr. Okrent was born in In-
dianapolis. He attended
Wayne State University,
where he received his
undergraduate and graduate
degrees. A resident of
Southfield, Mr. Okrent prac-
ticed law full-time until 1979.
He worked part-time until
seven months ago.
He leaves his wife, Gizella;
daughter and son-in-law,
Judith and Dr. Arthur Simon
of Wyoming, Ohio; sons and
daughters-in-law, Lawrence
and Inez of Evanston, Ill.,
Daniel and Rebecca of Wor-
thington, Mass.; sister and
brother-in-law, Mae and Sol
Moss of Southfield; eight
grandchildren.
Morton I. Silberberg
Morton I. Silberberg, 69, of
Southfield, died Oct. 15.
Mr. Silberberg was a former
office manager for the Ira
Kaufman Chapel. He was
founder and president of
Memorial Information
Systems and a member of
Temple Israel.
He leaves his sons and
daughter-in-law, Steven and
Penny of Morristown, Ariz.,
Michael and Robert, both of
Southfield; daughter, Frances
Russell of Lansing; sister,
Marjorie Neafach of Ken-
more, N.Y.; one grandson.
Irving Pokempner,
Furrier
Irving Pokempner of
Southfield and owner of
Midwest Fur Co., in Detroit,
died Oct. 21. He was 84.
Mr. Pokempner was born in
Lithuania and came to
America in 1928. He moved
to Detroit in the late 1930s.
He was the owner of Midwest
Fur until his retirement in
1969.
He headed the committee
organized to help families of
General Motors strikers in
1945-46. He was a vice presi-
dent, treasurer and secretary
of the Jewish Community
Council, one of the founders of
the Americans for
Democratic Action and a
longtime member of the
Labor Zionist Organization of
America.
He is survived by his wife,
Hannah; son and daughter-
in-law, Joshua and Gretchen
Gardner of Dexter, Mich.;
daughters and sons-in-law,
Rena and Michael Gordon of
Washington, D.C., Sarah
Pokempner and Jerry Levine
of Washington, D.C.; sister,
Zipporah Kabtzan of
Rechovot,
Israel; four
grandchildren.
Rose Goldberg, 102,
Community Activist
Rose Goldberg, 102, of
Southfield, died Oct. 19.
Mrs. Goldberg was honored
on many occasions for her
outstanding humanitarian
services in civic and Jewish
organizations. She was an of-
ficer of the Infant Orphanage
in Detroit, co-founder of the
Eva Prenzlauer Maternity
Aid Organization, which pro-
vided pre-natal care and
hospitalization for indigent
mothers. She was honored by
the American and Canadian
Red Cross for her services in
support of the 1944 Red Cross
War Fund and by the Jewish
Welfare Federation of Detroit
for her outstanding leader-
ship in the 1948 Allied
Jewish Campaign.
She was also honored by the
Father Flanagan's Boys
Home in 1948 as an honorary
citizen, by the Jewish Home
for Aged in 1955 for her
outstanding volunteer ser-
vice, by the Eleanor Roosevelt
Institute for Cancer Research
in 1960 and by the March of
Dimes for her humanitarian
service in the fight against in-
fantile paralysis.
Mrs. Goldberg leaves her
son and daughter-in-law, Dr.
Marvin and Sylvia Gilbar of
Santa Barbara, Calif.; 12
grandchildren; 12 great-
grandchildren; two great-
great-grandchildren.
Robert L. Reiss, 63
Insurance Sales
Robert L. Reiss, 63, of
Southfield, died Oct. 22.
Mr. Reiss was a self
employed insurance
salesman. He was past presi-
dent of Morganthau Lodge
B'nai B'rith, executive board
member of the Michigan
Association of Railway
Passengers, a member of the
Southfield Democratic Club
and Michigan Democratic
Party.
He leaves his wife, Lillian;
daughters and son-in-law,
Sheryl Reiss and Paul
Goldsmith of Amherst, Mass.,
Marlene of New York City.

Mrs. Paul was born in
Detroit and was an active
member of Temple Beth
Jacob in Pontiac. She was
secretary of its sisterhood.
Mrs. Paul also voluntered at
Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital.
She leaves her husband, Dr.
