wing, then moved to midfield.
"A very strong player," says
Nellis. "Had a strong kick.
"She had quite a bit of en-
durance. That's why I moved
her back to the midfield. She
could really move" quickly
between offense and defense.
"She covered a lot of ground
and was a strong player."
Nellis says that some
players from last season's
freshman team will likely
move up to the varsity, the
rest to junior varsity. She will
not know until spring prac-
tice, who will play varsity.
Both of the Koenigs began
playing soccer around age 5.
Jason has played year-round
for the past three years, after
playing basketball as an An-
dover freshman.
Besides soccer, Karen runs
varsity cross-country.
With all of their school ac-
tivities, the Koenigs must
both budget their time. Their
parents, Earl and Helene,
allow the pair to manage
their own time because, says
Helene, "they're pretty self-
directed." The Koenig family
includes 6-year-old son
Michael. They are members
of Congregation Shaarey
Zedek.
"Jason and I went to Hillel
Day School through the sixth
grade," explains Karen. "I
think we picked up good
study habits from there
because there was always a
lot of homework. So when I
got to West Hills Middle
School, it got easier. It was a
lot easier than Hillel."
Karen says that her athletic
and school activities comple-
ment each other. "Playing
soccer, I learned how to work
with other people. I know
what to say, how to offer con-
structive criticism and how
not to say the wrong thing.
Being the president of my
class helps me with soccer
and soccer helps me. with
that."
Karen says that her athletic
activities "make school so
much more fun because we'll
dress up on the days we have
meets or games — we'll wear
our uniforms. Just being in-
volved makes school so much
more fun that if you weren't
doing anything."
Since Jason plays just one
varsity sport, he has more
free time when soccer season
ends. "Right now I don't sleep
that much," he says. "There's
not a lot of free time because,
during the soccer season, I'm
practicing two or three hours
a day, or have a game, and
then I'm doing a lot of work
as president."
Jason's academics haven't
suffered. Like Karen, he is an
honor student. Jason has won
several academic awards, in-

cluding the Dartmouth Book
Award, a national honor for
11th graders recognizing
academic and leadership
achievements. He also won a
Detroit Free Press writing
award for a short story.
While Jason appreciates
those honors, he enjoys his
soccer awards even more,
"because soccer is a helluva
lot more fun. And it's more
fulfilling. It's a different type
of challenge."
Jason is considering atten-
ding an Ivy League college
next year. He says he pro-
bably will not play soccer
above the intramural level,
due to the difficulties in
balancing athletics and
academics in college.
Jason sometimes wonders if
he will blend into the crowd
at a college.
"It will be kind of a change,
but I try to push myself to be
a standout a little more than
everyone else. So hopefully I'll
be able to do that in college."
Jason says that he and
Karen get little notoriety for
their similar athletic and
school-related achievements.
"My little brother's coming
up and he's playing soccer,"
says Jason. "Maybe when he
gets to high shcool, we can
keep it going." Li
