FAVORITE BOOK: He just finished reading Evening News by Arthur Hailey BACKGROUND: Douglas Schubot was born and raised in Detroit. His parents Baraga and the late Jules Schubot were active in community affairs. His father founded the namesake company in 1917 and traveled throughout the world selling and buying jewelry. Douglas Schubot has childhood memories of meeting the illustrious clientele of his father, including Tennessee Williams, Lauren Bacall and Tony Martin. His father also sold jewels to the Grosse Pointe society crowd which included the Fords, Fitzpatricks and the Strohs. "We still sell to these people today," said Mr. Schubot. After completing the eighth grade at Hampton School in Detroit, Mr. Schubot attended military school in Florida. "I wanted to go to military school. I liked the discipline. I like wearing a shirt and tie. I've been accused of cutting the grass with a suite and tie on," he said. He attended the University of Michigan, then transferred to Michigan State University for the ROTC program during the Korean War. He graduated from MSU in 1953, and served two years with the United States Air Force in Japan as an officer. While in Japan, he managed to study one day a week with a famous pearl dealer. When Mr. Schubot returned home, he worked with his in-laws in the building business and on alternate days he worked in the jewelry business. Finding it difficult to split his time, he choose jewelry. He began keeping the books for the company and studied accounting for three years at Walsh. When his father died, Mr. Schubot continued to run the family business which is now in its third generation. Mr. Schubot prides himself on maintaining his father's high standards of merchandising. By observing his parents' and in- laws' active roles in the Jewish community, Mr. Schubot became active in many causes, from Israel Bonds to B'nai B'rith. He is also active in the general community as a board member of the Michigan Cancer Foundation and Oakland Family Services. He and his wife will be honored at the upcoming Fashion Group benefit on Nov. 16. "We want to support many causes because we want to see something being done," he said. 111
